Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Auto delete a buton.

    Hi Phorum,

    I want to put a button on the main menu of my app that will do the following:

    1. Run 5 different appends.
    2. Automatically delete the button after it is used the first time.

    The button is currently running the 5 append operations, now I want it to self destruct after it's 1st use. My first thought is to set a flag to .T. at the end of the script and test for that before running the appends on any subsequent onpush events for that button, hence if the flag is true, it will not run the appends. But that leaves a dead button on the menu that doesn't seem very professional

    As always all help will be gratefully appreciated.

    Try hiding it.

              Ed, I would be interested in the script you write to hide
              the button after it has finished its job. I would like to
              distribute a demo app of a program I have with data and
              after they have looked at the app then they could press a
              button to zap the demo database(s)and they could start
              entering their data (and the zap button would no longer
              appear on the menu)

                Just tested a really simple example with a button.

                Something like this code would hide the button

                'set flag = .f.

                      Hi Stan,

                      This works great but .... the next time the app is opened, the button
                      reappears (because the flag is reset to true), and then disappears when
                      the button is pressed. I need it to disappear and never reappear again.

                        Easily done in v5 with write_setting() and read_setting(). I'll design something for you which writes and reads a text file doing appproximately the same thing.

                          This goes in the button onpush event code, after you are sure the operations completed...

                          ''XBasic
                          'your code here......
                          '........
                          'substitute your button's name for button6

                          filename=:A5.get_path()+chr(92)+"beendone.txt"
                          result=file.exists(filename)
                          IF result=.F. THEN
                          file_pointer=file.create(filename,FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE)
                          file_pointer.flush()
                          file_pointer.close()
                          END IF
                          Act = "F"
                          file1_pointer=file.open(filename,FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE)
                          file1_pointer.write(Act,1)
                          file1_pointer.flush()
                          file1_pointer.close()
                          button6.hide()

                          Creates a text file in the database directory, one character.

                          This goes in the code for the oninit event of the form containing the button....

                          ''XBasic
                          filename=:A5.get_path()+chr(92)+"beendone.txt"
                          test=file.exists(filename)
                          IF test=.T. THEN
                          button6.hide()
                          End IF

                          Tests for the existence of the text file and hides the button if the text file exists.
                          There can be only one.

                              Hi Stan,

                              I have been playing with this for several days but still get the error;
                              "object method error, a parameter may be incorrect or misspelled".

                              Here is what I have on the ONPUSH EVENT of the button:

                              ''XBasic
                              'your code here......

                              IF result=.F. THEN
                              file_pointer=file.create(filename,FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE)
                              file_pointer.flush()
                              file_pointer.close()
                              END IF
                              Act = "F"
                              file1_pointer=file.open(filename,FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE)
                              file1_pointer.write(Act,1)
                              file1_pointer.flush()
                              file1_pointer.close()
                              button12.hide()

                              This is what I have on the ONINIT EVENT of the form that the button is on ...

                              ':controlpanel.hide()
                              parentform.maximize()
                              filename=:A5.get_path()+chr(92)+"beendone.txt"
                              test=file.exists(filename)
                              IF test=.T. THEN
                              ' button12.hide()
                              End IF

                              Some lines are presently commented out for test purposes.

                              BTW, the update operation works OK when tested.
                              The button is named button12
