Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Printing a Report When No Records are Found

    For Tom Cone if your out there:

    Tom:

    Why doesn't the following script work. It counts all of the records in the table even though this is the same filter used by the primary report.

    Dim CNT as N

    CNT = 0

    CNT = COUNT(NB_Daily_Detail->Daily_Comp_Dtaskd_What_End_Date.and.NB_Daily_Detail->Inv_Num=" ")

    Trace.writeln(str(CNT))

    If CNT = 0
    Report.preview("NB WIP No WIP")
    goto cleanup
    Else
    Report.preview("NB WIP By Month")
    goto cleanup
    end if

    cleanup:
    end

    Any ideas would be helpful.

    Bob, Count() doesn't work that way.

    Try:

    Code:
    CNT = TableCount("NB_Daily_Detail.dbf","NB_Daily_Detail->Daily_Comp_dt askD_What_End_Date .and. NB_daily_Detail->Inv_Num = ''")
    -- tom

      RE: Printing a Report When No Records are Found

      Tom:

      Get an error message that the system cannot find the file specified "l:\NB_Daily_Detail.dbf".

      If I take the underscore out it run but does not test the filter first. It goes straight to the first report since the CNT is still 0.

      Do I need to use some type of set table current function and than call that function in the TableCount??

        Bob,

        Cannot advise you without seeing the actual database. In my code snippet I assumed you had correctly identified the table name, and tried to copy it exactly. Did I mess it up somehow ?

          TOM:

          No the db name is correct.

          It is a child to the parent "NB Daily Main.dbf" which forms the set "New Build.set". These tables live on a network drive L: which is the located on a server about 18 miles away. We are connected via a T1.

          The screen (Form) where I want the button is attached to New Build.set. The the report that normally runs from this screen is built only on NB Daily Detail.dbf. (I'm looking for the value of work completed that has not been billed given an ending date and looking backwards, in this case the end of the month backwards). When all work has been billed, I want to produce a report that the manager can sign off on.

          I suspect that the counter can find the chaild table.

            Tom:

            This work fine is I hard code the date:

            Dim CNT as N

            CNT = 0

            CNT = TableCount("NB DAILY DETAIL.DBF","NB_Daily_Detail->Daily_Comp_dt Inv_Num='" " '")

            Trace.writeln(str(CNT))

            If CNT = 0
            Report.preview("NB WIP No WIP")
            goto cleanup
            Else
            Report.preview("NB WIP By Month")
            goto cleanup
            end if

            cleanup:
            end

            I've tried a number of ways to put the variable in for the date by all come back either no such field or can used in this function.

            Any ideas. I'd like to be able to just have the user enter the data when prompted.

            Thanks for your help.

              Bob,

              Perhaps the quickest idea would be to use the genie to define a saved query operation which does what you want. Then turn on the script recorder (low level), run the query and copy the filter expression from the script the genie made to the clipboard, and then paste it into the tablecount() function.

                I tried adding the following:

                WD = var->askd_What_End_Date (this did request the date)

                Then placed the WD in the filter as so:

                "NB_Daily_Detail->Daily_Compl_Dt

                    Bob,

                    The operations genie came up with a different filter expression.

                    while I think the one I supplied a few minutes ago will work, you might be interested in this:

                    since I didn't have your table, I created one
                    Table name is Invoices

                    It has two fields of interest:

                    T_date, a DATE type field
                    Inv_Num, a CHAR type field

                    I entered a few records, some of them had date values in the T_Date field earlier than 1/31/2003

                    On some of these earlier records I left the Inv_Num field empty (blank).

                    I then defined a global variable in the table structure, called END_DATE.

                    If I give End_date the value {01/31/2003} the following function returns the correct count of records with T_date earlier than 1/31/2003 and which have empty Inv_num fields:

                    tablecount("Invoices.dbf","T_DATEEND_DATE.AND.INV_NUM=\"\"")

                    Using the global variable seemed to simplify things for the Tablecount() function.

                        Tom:

                        The first one comes back with a data type mismatch. The second one works once and then remembers the date after that and wont ask for the date again.

                        I've tried various combination of the two, all of which indicate a data mismatch.

                        I'm going on vacation for a week (to play gold)and will get back to it when I return. This is a nice to have feature and not of great importance at the moment. I can always put another button on the form to use when no records are found which I may do as a short workaround.

                        Thanks again for your help. I do appreciate you taking your time to help out.
