Ask user variable

I am designing a production system for mailing jobs. Each record has a unique job id assigned by Alpha 5. I want the user to be able to search for a job id via a prompt that reads: "What job id". I am using the Ask user variable, but it returns me to the default browse. I want it to return me to the form. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Try this code on a button on your form

vFind = ui_get_text("","What Job ID")
Parentform.index_set( "YourJobIDIndex" )
parentform.find(vFind )

As usual, Tom's answer is the best method. I gotta tell ya.....

What I've been doing is to create a button that looks like the label of the field I want to do a 'find' on. I color it differently from the others on the form and attach xbasic like Tom's to it. You see, you can put it on the Id, Name, Invoice Number or whatever, just make sure that a index exists for each and that the button switches to that index before the 'find'. Believe me, I didn't think this up - just another neat thing learned from the many helpers on this board.

Tadd to Ken's comments, and in keeping with Tom's suggestion, I personally dislike using the Ask variables because there is no way to cancel 'em - once you start them you must answer them!

With a script like Tom's, the user has the ability to press the Cancel button and stop everything. I would have add a couple lines like this:

vFind = ui_get_text("","What Job ID")
IF vFind = ""
END
END IF
Parentform.index_set( "YourJobIDIndex" )
parentform.find(vFind )

Otherwise, when the user clicks the Cancel button, the script continues on and probably does something the user didn't really want to do. In this case, it would probably have jumped to the first record - not what most users would normally expect when they press Cancel.

I accepted it as it was and thought "Hey he must be using a 'shorthand' text system".
