Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Trouble With Chidren

I trying very hard to create a simple way of generating and editing a new child record. The operator will use a form with a named browse showing only parent records. Form and browse are based on the set "set_jobentry". The form is "frm_openjobs" and the named browse for the form is "brz_openjobs". The operator, while having the form open may filter the browze by customer number using a button. The main point here is that when the operator doubleclicks on parent job that requires additional service I want to create a new child record and pull that new record into a new form called "frm_svcorderentry" which is also based on the same set. I'm trying to maintain referencial integrity. I tried to create a new child with table level code now remaked out on the browses doublclick event and also on the form. The only success that I have found at creating a new record on the from was when I added an embedded browse to the form for the sole purpose of having a viable place to use the code "topparent:browse1.new_record()" . This seems to work but is too messy for my liking and has problems of it's own. The table "tbl_jobdetail" has a lookup to the "tbl_custhrd" to retrieve the "price_code" but needs the customer account number. The price code is needed as well as the data entry "job_code" to allow the calcuated field rule for "price" to work. I've attached my test db. Any suggestions. Ive read may of the articles here and you all are the best. Thanks in advance for your time.

    Mike,
there are at least 3 different ways to pass field values between forms.

    See,

If your button script opens a second form, you can pass the link field value(s) to the necessary objects on the called form, even though they're marked read only. Marking them read only makes sense because you don't want the user to inadvertantly break the link by changing their values.

Tom, Thanks for responding. I'm familiar with your passing values examples and having studied them in the past. My big question is how to create another child record in tbl_jobdetails that is still linked to the parent tbl_jobs. I'm going to review your passing values examples again to refresh myself and see if an answer is there.

        Mike,

I'd base the called form on tbl_jobdetails, not a set of tables.

I'd expect to find the necessary link field values in the current (calling) form.

I'd pass them to the new record in the called form.

When the new reocrd is saved in the calling form it will automatically become a part of the set in the calling form, provided you passed the necessary link field values to it.

However, because all of this is happening beneath (behind) the forms, you can't see the new record until the calling form's display is refreshed or resynched.

Mike, here's an example that illustrates the kind of thing I'm talking about. Perhaps portions of it will be of use.

Unzip the attachment to an empty folder.

          Begin by opening Form1.

              RE: Trouble With Chidren

Tom, Once again thanks again for your help. I copied the form I had and assigned it to the child table instead of the set. I then used your script from the create new record button and with a few modifications attached that to my named browse onrowdoubleclick event. This produced the required result in creating a new child record.

              Cheers!
