Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Xbasic Append Crashes

    a5v4.5 b266

    When I run the following code through the Debugger I get an error when it hits tbl.append()

    Field and expression types must match

    The tables used are exactly the same. The transaction table is simply a copy to a backup dir.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks, Jeff

    dim tbl as p

    tbl = table.open("a5v45test")
    append.t_db = "c:\acebackup2\a5v45test.dbf"
    append.m_key = ""
    append.t_key = ""
    append.m_filter = ""
    append.t_filter = ""
    append.type = "All"
    append.m_count = 4
    append.m_field1 = "LNAME"
    append.m_exp1 = "@A5V45TEST->LNAME"
    append.m_field2 = "FNAME"
    append.m_exp2 = "@A5V45TEST->FNAME"
    append.m_field3 = "ADDRESS"
    append.m_exp3 = "@A5V45TEST->ADDRESS"
    append.m_field4 = "LONG_LONG_LONG_NAME"
    append.m_exp4 = "@A5V45TEST->LONG_LONG_LONG_NAME"
    append.t_count = 0
    tbl.append()
    tbl.close()

    end

    Jeff

    Some error messages are a bit crytic and may not represent the actual error. Verify that both tables actually exist and the table in the table.open() command is in the current directory. If the current directory is "c:\acebackup2\", you will be trying to append a table to itself. If that doesn't have any effect, try renaming the destination file to something else. While using the same name shouldn't be a problem, it is worth a try.

      Thanks Jerry

      I found that if I include the .ddd .ddm .ddx files in the same backup dir with the .dbf file the append above works.

      I have no idea why. Would like to know if someone understands the secret.

      Thanks again, Jeff

        RE: Xbasic Append Crashes

        table.DDD
        table.DDM
        table.DDX
        The tables data dictionary files: specifically, the data
        dictionary table, memo, and index file. Stores layouts,
        field rules, ranges, queries, and saved utility settings.

        So if you don't include these, Alpha (to be specific, the append operation) can't be positive that the data types match.

        Or so it would seem.
        There can be only one.

          Jeff,

          Strange result because I often have the situation where I only have access to the .dbf files and the appends are quite happy.

            Are you sure that the fields exactly match in size and type.

              Jeff,

              the table's dictionaries are also where fieldnames longer than 10 chars are stored, too. If the append utility can't find the long names you're using it won't work. Make sense?

                Michael,

                Does either table use fieldnames longer than 10 chars? I suspect not. -- tom

                  You're right, I have some file names longer than 10.

                  I also have some with blank spaces :-( I plan to fix these problems in the next upgrade of my app. This makes sense and the button works now.

                  Thanks to all
