Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5v4.5 system requirements

I just purchased the runtime version of A5v4.5. I am having some problems with system lockups when running the application. I have searched the documentation that came with the runtime and A5v4.5 and can not find any specific minimum ram, cpu and hd requirements. The two systems I am having problems with are a Win Xp with 128m ram and a Win 95 with 64m ram. I can run both applications on 2 separate computers at my location. Both run Win 98, one with 256m ram; the other with 96. Both applications consist of 4 tables, with 2 linked in a single set. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank You

Jeff, I'd think it was conflict between Win95 and XP more than anything else. Alpha Five will run on either, but I'm not sure Win95 boxes can co-exist with XP boxes on the same network. Do they have any other network apps running across their LAN?

Tom the applications are on separate systems for 2 different clients.Neither is on a network. On one (WIN XP) the client can open the application and begin entering data, but the system will freeze after a short period. They do not get an error message or crash. The A5 freezes, but can be closed with the mouse or keyboard commands. On the other system the client can open the application and view data already entered but they get an illegal operation or out of memory prompt when they try to enter data. Both clients are using data that was originally generated in A4v6 which I imported into A5 for them, via ascii files. I know that the there is a strong possibility the problem lies in the particular configurations of each system. I was mainly concerned with knowing what the system requirements were under the different operating systems so I can advise them of the best way to upgrade, if necessary. Both clients had been using an application I had developed in A4v6.

        Jeff

I would suspect a problem with the application rather that a system configuration problem. I have run A5v5 very successfully with a fairly extensive application on a 300 pentiumII with only 64 meg ram and the original Win98. While this is at the minimum requirement for A5v5, the application runs without a problem, although it is no speed demon. A5v5 seems to run fine on Win98, WinME, Win2000, and WinXP. Minimum ram is 64 meg although 128 meg would be better and recommended.

The real question is does this application run correctly on another computer? An out of memory error can occur for a number of reasons. Not having enough ram is rarely one of them. More likely, something in the application is causing memeory to be accessed, but not released. An example would be repeatedly opening a form and not closing it. After multiple copies were open, eventually all available memory would be in use. Verify that the database can be opened on another computer and run successfully.

Sorry, I was referring to A5V5. Actually, the requirements for A5V4.5 are even less. It should run very well on 64 meg ram. I have a number of applications in a5v4.5 that run well on 166 mhz computers with 64 meg ram.

            RE: A5v4.5 system requirements

            Jerry,

I'm not knowledgeable about XP (yet!). Is there a compatability setting or property he can adjust to tell XP to run his app as though it were a Win2k or Win98 box?

            Jeff,

You might try running the client's runtime installation against the sample Invoicing app that ships with Alpha Five. If the invoicing app runs ok, that would indicate that the problem lies in your application. Another idea would be to run the runtime against the tables and sets in your app from the control panel. This would verify that the setup is correct, and would be further indication that the problem lies in the app.

If the problem is in the app look for scripts which assume the presence of external files or folders. Are there pathing issues here? Are there missing bitmap files that Alpha is trying to load?

              RE: A5v4.5 system requirements

Tom I'm not that familiar with XP either, I checked through all the scripting commands and can not find any references to tables or sets that are not included in the data folder. The clients only have the runtime version, which didn't come with samples. The application is based on the invoice set from A5. I can run the application in the runtime and A5 on my computer. I can run the application in the runtime on a second computer that I have. The client did upgrade an older system to XP, that's why I was interestested in system requirements under that OS. I am going to have the client delete the data and reinstall to see if the problems reappear.

              Thanks

Jerry, thanks for the reply. The application will run on 2 separate systems at my location. One with Win98 and 256m ram and celeron processor, the other on Win98 96m ram and an old P233 processor. The client upgraded an older system to XP, which is why I suspect the system at his location. I'm new to A5 so I don't know how it responds in the different OS's and hardware configurations.

You may be on to something. In the upgrade to XP there may be some legacy issues with the upgrade. I have one system that is Win98 upgraded form Win95 and it does have a few odd problems that a clean install of Win98 does not show. I know that Alpha is very stable on WinXP. The issue may also be a driver conflict, either a video driver problem or a print driver problem. These are common issues on upgrades where the old drivers are not compatible with the new operating system. This may be a hard problem to isolate. Search the forum for "drivers" and you will find a lot of references to problems with HP print drivers. I have also had a few problems with S3 based video drivers which cause a crash.

                    FWIW

I have found a number of problems (in more programs than Alpha) caused by using WIN 98 shortcuts in WIN 2000 or XP.

Be sure to re-create any shortcut for a program in the operating system is actually getting used.

                      Jeff,

Where is your data located?? We ran into a problem with XP a while back that the data was in a folder under Program Files using a network. We had to go through some gymnastics to get it working and we were using standard stock MSVB programming.

Dave, the data is located in a folder in the the runtime path. After further troubleshooting with the client it looks like the problem is due to a faulty XP upgrade. Certain keyboard commands (cntrl-alt-del) do not appear to be functioning. Shortcuts that were created on the site do not function properly either. I'm not that familiar with XP yet, but it looks to function much better on factory installs than upgrades to older systems. Thank You to everyone who responded to this thread.
