Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    table level calc

    Hi Phorum,

    I have a problem on a form with a table level calc field. It is made
    up by adding 3 other table level calc fields and several other fields
    in the report. The 3 other calc fields work as expected. The 1 that
    does not work properly has a weird delay. All of the fields that get
    added together precede in time the final calc field. If I change a
    field value that effects the value in one of the other calc fields, the
    value in the summed calc field does not change, however; if I change
    a value in another field, then the summed calc field takes on the value
    that it should have had for the first change. The expressions for these
    fields are in field rules.

    Examples:
    calc->wait_time: (Works Ok)
    if(wait_time>15,wt_tm_cost_min*(wait_time-15),0)

    calc->extra_wt: (Works OK)
    if(weight>50,((weight-50)*cst_per_lb),0)

    calc->courcost (the one that doesn't work right)
    wait_time+extra_wt

    I want to stress that all necessary fields that get added together for
    courcost precede courcost.

    All help is appreciated,
    efs

    RE: table level calc

    Calculated fields from calculated fields are often delayed. The final calculated field doesn't have the data it needs until the second save operation; hence, the final field lags one iteration behind.

    Instead of calculating from the calculated fields, make the expression of the final field from the input fields.

    That is if:
    Field 3 = Field 1 + Field 2
    Field 6 = Field 4 + Field 5
    and you want
    Field 7 = Field 3 + Field 6

    substitute
    Field 7 = Field 1 + Field 2 + Field 4 + Field 5

      Hi Ohlen,
      Thank you for replying. In your example, can Fields1 thru 6 be calc
      fields? If so, that is what I'm doing.
      Thank you

        Hi All,
        Would it make a difference if I made the calc fields form level? If
        so, would all of the calc values show in a browse?

          RE: table level calc

          Form level fields will not show on a browse.

          Here' what you need to do to have the field level calculations work out

          calc->wait_time: (Works Ok)
          if(wait_time>15,wt_tm_cost_min*(wait_time-15),0)

          calc->extra_wt: (Works OK)
          if(weight>50,((weight-50)*cst_per_lb),0)

          calc->courcost= if(wait_time>15,wt_tm_cost_min*(wait_time-15),0)+ if(weight>50,((weight-50)*cst_per_lb),0)

              Ohlen,

              I thought that you could insert a calc display field in an embedded browse, if the fields required for the calc are in the same table. I vaguely recall doing this by 'inserting' a new column into the browse object.

                RE: table level calc

                The required fields used in the calc expressions are definitely in the
                browse. So I'll be OK, since I had to use form level calcs.
                Thanks Tom,
