Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Ranking numbers

    Hello,

Is there a way to rank a group of numbers? I have sets of four numeric totals - I want to create a rank order 1 - 4, highest to lowest - the actual totals themselves not being important to this exercise.

    Thanks for any help.

    RE: Ranking numbers

    Glenn,

    probably.

Tell us more about the context in which you want to do this.
(Are you designing a form, letter, or report? based on single table or a set of tables? If a set, how is it arranged?)

Tell us more about how the group of four numbers are being stored. i.e. are they fields in the each record? records in 4 tables? are they stored in numeric type fields, or char type fields?

      RE: Ranking numbers

      Tom,

This is part of a form and will be used in reports. It is a single table, and the figures each have there own numeric field. I need to take these groups of four fields and create a ranked oreder 1-4. I have assumed this ranking will require four additional fields for each group in the form, but I mainly need this information for use in reports.

        RE: Ranking numbers

Glenn, you still haven't given us much to go on.

Generally, this kind of record structure is used by folks who have more spreadsheet experience than database experience. A database approach would link the table to a related 'child' table, using a one to many link, storing each numeric value in a separate record.

When you put 4 similar fields in the same record, and then want to rank them, you have to write a script or expression that contends with 2 the 4th power possible combinations.

        1,2,3,4
        1,3,4,2
        1,4,2,3
        1,3,2,4
        1,4,3,2
        and so on.

Gets very messy in a hurry.

Tell us what it is you're trying to do, and perhaps we can offer more constructive suggestions. More details, please.

          RE: Ranking numbers

          Tom,

Hmmm. It's not the first time this spreadsheet comment has come up - and that is definately true of my thinking and will remain so, it seems - I can't seem to make the leap out of it).

I don't know what more info to give. I have four numeric totals, each in their own field. The actual total is not important. What is important is the relative value between them. So I want to rank them from hightest total (rank 1) to lowest total (rank 4).

I think that with both messy script writing or separate tables, I'm going to get out of my depth very quickly. Perhaps I'll be forced to manually rank them during inputing - a cumbersome and time consuming task. As there are only four numbers, I was hoping there would be some means of identifying where each of the figures would belong - highest, second highest, second lowest, lowest.

          Is it not to be?

            Glenn,

Email a sample table to me and I'll suggest some alternatives to you.

As for details, I'm trying to understand the real world goal you're trying to accomplish.

In similar situations folks sometimes want to produce a report that is grouped or sorted in a particular way. Tell us what kinds of specific things you need to be able to do or produce with the rankings.
