Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: CANT FIND MY CUSTOMERS

Copy your old files to a new folder. I usually create a folder under the main A5 program folder for my applications. Then start A5. You will be presented with a screen allowing you to open databases. Navigate to your database and double click on it. It should open then in A5V4.5. Some scripts and layouts may need tweeked in A5 for proper operation.

As a precaution, do not try to open your original data files. Instead, work only with copies so no corruption can creep into the original data.

PS. In internet lingo writing in all caps is considered the equivalent of shouting in a voice conversation. Harder to read and not necessary. Please continue to post your questions; someone here will always try to help.

              RE: CANT FIND MY CUSTOMERS

              Shirley,
Can you find your files using windows explorer or my computer? Your version of Alpha 4.5 should have installed in c:\program files\a5V4. Navigate to that folder and then click on file/new/folder to create a new folder. Then name it anything you want. Now go to wherever you've found your original files, highlight the first one by clicking on it. Then move to the last one and shift-click on it to highlight them all. Right click on one of the highlighted files and choose copy. Now left click on the new folder, then right click and choose paste. This will make a copy of your files in the new folder.

Now start alpha 5 and choose more databases in the window that opens. Navigate the the new folder you created and you should see your database. Double click on it and it should open.

              Hope this helps.

If you can find your table on the PC, here is what works for me. Go to the conrol pannel. Click on the Tables TAB, RIGHT Click in an OPEN Space, then Add Tables. If you know where the table is located double click on it and it will ADD it for you with all forms. I have used this many times. All tables needs to be in one Dir or Sub Dir under that or you will have problems.

Are you upgrading from Alpha Four?

If you're upgrading from Alpha Five, which version of Alpha Five had you been using?

                              Shirley

If you bought Alpha 5 in 1998, you might have A5V1, which was a Windows 3.1 program and only recognized short file names. If you want to use this program on newer computers, the program must be installed in a directory path with only short, 8 digit names. The same applies to the data path. What I have used is this for the program

                              c:\A5V1\

and this for the data path (if the application was called "Mystuff"

                              c:\a5v1\stuff\

Now, as for why you data is not showing up in the new program, there are a number of reasons possible. But the real information we all need is in what specific version was the original data created. This will make giving advice much easier. If you were using any windows Alpha version A5v1 to A5v3, the the data should open without too many problems. If you were using the DOS versions of Alpha, A4v2 to A4v6, then the only thing that will open in the new program are the dbf files. All forms etc would have to be recreated.

Another possibility is that the paths for the data are different in the new installation compared to the original. Normally, most users place the table (dbf) files and all of their related files in the same directory as the database (the adb, alb, alm, alx) files. If your configuration was different, then the new configuration probably can't find the files. To check, open the database, the adb file. If the tables list on the control shows the table names grayed out, then they can't be found. If this is the case, post a message to this string and someone can walk you though the process to correct the problem.
