Importing Caracter Seperated Txt File

I have a application that requires a number of same type txt files all with different file names be imported each week is there a way to get the Import operation to read the import file name and path, from a "variable"? I have keep getting invalid file name wher i reun the saved operation.

This sounds like a situation where a customized import operation would do the trick. An easy way to get started is to define and save an example import operation using the new operation genie. Then activate the script recorder, and set the option to record LOW LEVEL xbasic statements. Then run the saved import operation. If you then go back to the the script recorder window you'll see the actual script which the genie used to do the import. Copy it to the Windows clipboard, and then paste it into the OnPush event for a button on your form. You will see that the name and path to the import source file is a parameter passed to the import utility.

Here's how I did it.

The original script generated by the genie began like this:

import.type = 0
import.names = "use"
import.file = "c:\a5v4\forkeith\customers.asc"

The script as I modified it to pass a variable to the import utility:

dim sourcefile as C
sourcefile = "C:"+chr(92)+"a5v4"+chr(92)+"forkeith"+chr(92)+"customers.asc"

import.type = 0
import.names = "use"
'import.file = "c:\a5v4\forkeith\customers.asc"
import.file = var->sourcefile

You'll notice I passed a complete path and filename identifying the source for the import utility.

You'll notice I used the ASCII equivalent for the backslash in the path statement.

Keith, one further thought. I think your imports will go more smoothly if you preformat the import source files so that each column (field) has the same width in each of the various files. The import genie will set the specifications to match the width of each field in the sample it inspects during design. It will be easiest if the sample field widths the genie determines during design, match the actual field widths of your import source files, and it would be helpful if the import source files all have the same structure (both as to field sequences, and as to field widths.)

Thanks for the help, this will make importing are weekly files so that anyone in the office can do it, and I can take the time off i have not had for the last three years. Thanks again you guys are great!
