Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    simple posting problem

    hi again all:

i am trying to use a field rule to post payments against an invoice balance. the "s_payments" set has a many to one child table "s_p_detail" whose first field is "invoice_num" (looks up from "sale_head" that contains the balance i want to post to). the posting rule is to subtract the payment from the balance to allow for partial and over payment recording. if there are multiple invoices paid on one cheque the second and subsequent postings do not occur. oddly enough i have an almost identical structure setup for deducting shipped inventory from back orders that works fine.

as per usual any help is appreciated.

    thanks in advance!!

    regards,

    ed taylor

    RE: simple posting problem

    Ed,

If the problem occurs when you split a payment made with a single cheque tell us how you're doing it. The post field rule should fire each time you add or change each child table record. Consider this possibility the post may in fact be happening, and the form's display may be out of synch. -- tom

      RE: simple posting problem

      hi tom:

thank you for your reponse (again)!

this is the corker, i have the same posting setup in another set that works fine. the first post indeed works and after seeing the second post fail i went to the table "sale_head" and the posting did not occur. there was no splitting in this case just the full amount which should have resulted in a zero balance.

thanks again tom and top of the season!

      regards,

      ed

Ed, maybe I'm tired, but I'm not following you. Perhaps others will be able to help, but I'm going to need a lot more detail. In your post you say that the other post is working fine, and then begin to describe a sequence that seems to be failing exactly like your problem with the first.

I'm badly confused about which post is which, which is working, and which is not, and what, exactly, is broken in either or both.

If you care to attach a working model here, with step by step, mouseclick by mouseclick, instructions on how to trigger the fault, I'll be happy to take a look.

            tom:

i truncated my last message (first file zip xfer).

these are the tables involved. if you try to post the payment field in "s_p_detail" to the balance field in "sale_head" this will create the problem.

i will send another set with this done. ... sorry about the discord ..

            back in a minute

            ok i'll try again
