Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Losing 1st Record

I use alpha5 version4 for adatabase for the Town's registered voters' maintainance. We also supply copies to voters and others in a zipped file of the table. One person who purchased a zipped disk we put in dbf format keeps on losing the 1st record in the table. I tried the same after I unzipped it to derryvtr.dbf and tried to bring it into 2000 Access I have at home and the 1st record was missing and using the same disk I unzipped into Alpha5 and the 1st record was there. I have no idea what is happening. Any ideas would help.

    Nip,

Sounds like an Access issue, doesn't it?

Don't know how you're doing the import to Access, but the Alpha DBF is equivalent to FoxPro 2.6 formatted tables.

You might visit an Access newsgroup for assistance.

An alternative, would be to provide the list in a comma delimited ascii file. Perhaps Access could import that more accurately.

      Nip,

One thing you may want to check is whether the record was "Marked".

When you mark or delete a record in A5, a character is put into a hidden field at the beginning of that record.

Access will treat these as deleted records.

      Just something to check.

        Nip,

For what it's worth, I would distribute the records in Excel format, because it is so widely used.

I would then check after exporting to Excel and verify all are there.

          RE: Losing 1st Record

          Hi Tom

Thanks for the reply. I did export to Excel as Jim Talbott suggested and it worked Ok.

I have been for several years backing up with a batch file as Derryvtr.zip into the A drive as derryvtr. zip in derryvtr.dbf.

This will unzip into derryvtr.dbf in a Directory PCF\derryvtr.dbf and then I link it to a5v4\derryvtr.dbf.

It was when someone unzipped the disk into Access2000 that the first record was missing as the total count was one less and it was the first record. I do delete marked records in a Status Field, and then I pack the database after any deletion. This has been a common [ractice.

I'll try the Access News Group. Thanks again for help in this forum. It has been great.

            RE: Losing 1st Record

            Nip,

If it were an ascii comma delimited file, Access probably needs to know if the first record contains field names, and should be ignored. Wonder if that's a possibility here, even though it's a DBF ?

              Hi Tom

I had success with the ascii file bringing it into access 2000. The town is now on access2000, but I use Alpha5 which very well for my work, but I am told by the Software Administrator that Alpha5 derryvtr.dbf is incompatible trying to bring it into an Access2000 table.

As we are elected and I have trained another person who likes Alpha5, I am sticking with it. I am still trying to find out why it does not click with the first record as I try to link or import it into the Town's network. In fact I would like to update with version5.

It's been very interesting and helpful on this forum and I am learning everyday.

Any comments you might have will be apprecited.
