Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Lookup Field

I have a set containing a tabel of Businesses linked to a table of Codes which also has a field saying what they do.

    0300 concrete supplier
    0400 masonry contractor
    etc

I would like to place a field on my form not linked to the current record, which works like a dropdown lookup field on the code table, where I can see the two columns containing the code and description, select one, and have the form move to the first business associated with that code, or filter the form for that code.

Any ideas how this can be accomplished?

    RE: Lookup Field

Rob, how many entries do you expect to have in the Codes table?

How frequently will the Codes table be updated?

Does the user need to browse the list of Codes records to find the desired one, or will they usually know what they want?

      RE: Lookup Field

      Hi, Tom!

The table currently has 219 entries

The user needs to browse for the correct enty by description, but needs to see the number as well. (Sometimes you might know that the description you want is in say division 05 - from 01 to 16 - the first two digits of the code.)

The codes table is sometimes, but infrequently updated.

I have this working in an existing access setup, which uses the same .dbf tables, and am trying to replicate it in A4 v4.5

        RE: Lookup Field

        Rob,

How about emailing me the codes table? In first message you describe a single field that has numeric and text components. In the second post you seem to be saying that the codes table actually has two fields, one numeric, and one text. Color me confused.

          RE: Lookup Field

I guess I was trying to simplify.

The actual structure has three field, but the third one is irrelevant (I think) to this issue.

          Code Description Cost-Code

          0300 concrete supplier xxx
          0400 masonry contractor yyy

I'll try to attach a copy of it below - haven't tried that yet!

            RE: Lookup Field

            Rob,
Using your table, I added a test table to similuate your second table and a form that populates a list box from your table records. After selecting an item from the list box, the form will go to the first matching record in the test table with the same code. If no matching code is found, it will go to the next closest match or the last record in the table. The two tables are not linked into a set.
Save the zip file into a test location separate from your production files. Look at the form's 2 scripts in design mode. Hope this helps.
