Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

User Defined Control, event setting, etc, problem

    Hi,

I am trying to use a "user defined control" on a form, and cannot get the syntax correct - I think.

From the A5 Xbasic Ref Manual, pages 74/75, I believe I should be able to have a UDC which will do the following:-

Recognize the occurance, if it happens, of a message during a script; acknowledge the message(give an "ok"); then display a corresponding, but different, message; and maybe take some actions.

The first message I want to deal with is "record not found", but there will be others.

I have got the UDC on the form, but making it work is baffling me.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Brian.

    Brian,

Are you sure you want a UDC? I've never used them.

Why not just a button? And add the code:

    script here

    IF Script_above = whatever
    Ui_msg_box("Title","This condition is true.",0+64)
    End IF

    script continue

    Good scripting

    Tom

The 0 above gives the OKAY button to continue

RE: User Defined Control, event setting, etc, prob

      Tom,

      Thanks for the response.

I am basically trying to set up a system where the English messages will not be seen, or at least not noticed much, in an app. Eg during a "find", if the message "record not found" appears, I would like to automatically give an "ok" to clear the message, and then show a corresponding but different message and maybe do an action.

As I understand it, your method would need the "script here" to recognize the appearance of a message, and that is what I am not getting.
If I can have something, as per an event, which recogizes the appearance of a message then I think I will be ok; using a button would be simple then, I agree. I cannot get the "OnMessage" to work - syntax problem I think.

The app is in Portuguese, and I want to avoid English messages appearing if possible, as our staff won't understand them. I could just tell them to "ok" anything that appears, but that seems pretty shotgunnish.

      Thanks for your help,

      Brian

        Brian,

Pardon me for jumping in. I think there's an easier way.

Build a custom find, prompting the user for the search key, doing the find with Xbasic, and then if the find is not successful, popping up a message box in the language of choice.

        Would an example help?

          Brian,

Here's an example of a custom find by key sequence. The
approach outlined here could be adapted to accommodate others kinds of searches.

            Tom Cone Jr,

Thanks for the help, I'll try it out.

Am I reading the manual wronly, I thought it meant that there is available an event "OnMessage", which I could then use, similar to "onerror"

            Thanks for the help,

              Brian,

I have zero experience building User Defined Controls. I think they're included so that folks who know how to build windows and dialog boxes in C, using direct calls to the Windows API, can accommodate them in Alpha Five. This is an area that I think is very advanced, and I don't think there are many Alpha Five developers that could offer guidance to you. Avoiding such things is the principle reason I chose Alpha Five as my primary development tool.

                Tom,

Thanks for the advice. I think that there are already enough holes in walls made with my head around here, so I agree; I'll leave that area alone.
