Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Get the value from a field in a different table

Can someone point me in the right direction?

I have several different product lines (11 in all) each one begins with a different prefix (Cobras="CC", LM3600="KD"). I have created separate tables for each product and can get those tables to provide me with an autoincrement serial number (each product is at different place in their life cycle -- Cobras are on serial number CC 00108, LM3600s are at KD 00624, etc).

I have a main table (SerialNumberLog) where I want to record every piece of equipment - the date, model, serial number, who it was sold to, the contract number. In the SerialNumberLog I created a cascading table lookup that works quite nicely to get the correct prefix based on the model, and I was then able to do a conditional table lookup based on the prefix to open the appropriate table lookup (I checked off user can enter a new record), but it was awkward getting the next serial number.

What I really want to happen is based on the prefix, open the correct table, create the next autoincrement number and return that number to the serial number field in the current (SerialNumberLog) table.

As you may have guessed -- I have only being using Alpha for about a month -- I have looked in XBasic for Everyone and the XBasic Reference Manual, I have tried to find something similar here on the message board, but I am currently in brain overload and every time I think I know which direction to head in... I am wrong again ...

    Can someone help?

RE: Get the value from a field in a different tabl

I'm sure there are many ways of doing what you want.

Keeping the end-in-mind", you said, "What I really want to happen is based on the prefix, open the correct table, create the next autoincrement number and return that number to the serial number field in the current (SerialNumberLog) table."

    So I would suggest:

    1. Place all Products in the same table, since they share the same fields - yes?

    2. Then place a button on a form, that would call two arrays based on the above table.

2a The first array would be based on a unique index to just get the prefix.

2b The second array would use this prefix to call another index on the same table to select from the products with this beginning prefix.

If you need help coding an array, give us the table & field names. I'm also confused by all the tables. Maybe show us the set arrangement so we can see where data is coming from and going to.

    You'll get it.

okay - I've spent what time I had this morning gathering up stuff about arrays ... I'll poke away at it and see if I get it. Thanks for the tip -- I'll let you know how things turn out.

Don't be surprised if you hear back from me -- along with a copy of my files.

me again ... I worked through the Hurray for an Array on the LearnAlpha site, and it's pretty cool.

In my case however, I'm still not sure how I would apply it.

I have attached a trimmed down copy of my database.

In 01-sn_log, I want to record the type of machine, and the next available serial number for that model (which to me means I would have to generate the next serial number somewhere -- and record it so it doesn't get used again).

I can see how to use the array to select the model, but I still don't understand how to use it to generate the next serial number for that model and record it.

My MakeModel table lists all the Equipment, the different model numbers and the beginning serial number of that attachment type to make it a little clearer to you.

Its seems like it should be so simple --

          Eva,

Its seems like it should be so simple - Looks quite complicated to me.

Why do you need the next serial number by model? This is what complicates things. Could you use the Prefix plus the next consecutive serial number from all models?

Help me understand why you need the next consecutive number by model. I'm sure it can be done, but not without some considerable work.

Other ideas are most welcome. Jump right in...

            Here is one option.

I added a field to your log file - Serial Number2 and made it a calculated field based on the serial number gotten from an earlier lookup.

Then I posted the SN2 value back to the makemodel dbf so next time it will increase by model. See code on Save event button.

            Is this what you want..

You are a brilliant, brilliant man! Thank you. That is what I want.

The reason for the bizzare serial number ranges is this database is going to replace a million spreadsheets already in use ... apparently some people don't like change -- so we have to make this transition as painless as possible for them.

Thanks again Tom -- I am going to study your code and figure out how to do this on my own (I know I need to read all my books from beginning to end again).

Now I'll go an finish this next part of the app and carry on with the rest -- from here on in, I think it should be fairly "simple".

                Eva,

Although you say,"You are a brilliant, brilliant man!"

I must add that my solution needs improvement. Because the post operation is on the SAVE button, it will keep updating the field in MakeMode each time it is pressed - even after editing another field.

Instead copy this post operation to the OnChange event of Serial Number1 on the form. And you may want to ask the user if they want to update the Serial Number in MakeMode.

response = ui_msg_box("Do you want to update serial number in MakeModel?",1)
                if response = UI_CANCEL_SELECTED then
                END
                end if

                Glad my suggestion was helpful.
