Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Lock out of Changing a Table

Has any experinced not being able to change a table. When entering a NEW date field it tells me NERMIC VALUE OUT OF RANGE or just change the NAME of one it tells me the same. What can be wrong, for I have changed names of other tables. Therefore I cannot add or change anything to the table structure. Also I have not been able to delete any unwanted items either. Shouldn't we have that choice to get RID of things we do need or decided to change it. Tells me table row not complete

RE: Lock out of Changing a Table

    Ken,

it sounds like the table is in use by another process and that Windows is protecting the earlier process from any interference. The table may be open already, or Windows thinks it's still open. A cold boot, restart, will clear this kind of problem, provided the table in question is not automatically reopened when you start alpha five again.

it may also be that your files have been set read-only in the process of copying them from a CD platter. If the problem began after moving files from a CD this is almost certainly the problem. Removing (re-setting) the read-only attribute on all files in the database will clear this kind of problem.

RE: Lock out of Changing a Table

Thanks Tom, No, this have NOT been copied from a CD. I never use that method. They were in A4v7, copied over from an A4 Dir. to a new dir in A5. Then I added all the tables to the current A5. One of the LAST drag behinds. I just could not see all the time rebuilding all the forms and Reports. But see now it is worth it. I have changed some of the other but this one I cannot change. I have searched everywhere to change the attribute but fail to find it. Please tell me how I can check it. I never changed it before, so that is New to me.

RE: Lock out of Changing a Table

        Ken, try this.

shut down your pc. Wait for a count of 15 and then power back up.

        Start Alpha Five.

        Open the database.

        Close all open forms.

At the Alpha Five control panel, select the tables / sets tab.

Right click on the table in question.

        Select modify structure.

To delete a field, position your cursor on its row, hold down the shift key, and press down arrow. entire row is selected. Press Delete key, then Ok or yes to permit the deletion.

After each change, save the table. Wait for the save to be completed before making the next change.

If you need to add fields, add them at the bottom of the existing structure. Don't try to insert them in the middle.

Provide details on any problem you have.

          ken:

Sounds to me like the problem lies with a numeric field that already exists in the table. Hence the numeric value out of range.

I'd make a back up copy, then delete one field at a time while in structure mode, and save the change each time.

Narrow down where the problem lies by process of elimination, then restore your original files and correct the problem.

As for the table row not complete, don't move the cursor to the first empty row below the field names. This always throws Alpha into a loop because it sees that new row as incomplete.

Hey, it's worth a try, anyway...

Or export the data to some external file type in record number order and if it fails during the export, then look at the next record od data that didn't make it into the external file.

Thanks fellows for all the help. I found the problem to be that somehow 6 |||||| bar looking things were in 6 records. How I got there I do NOT know. But after removing them it allowed me to make the changes.

              Thanks Again

What technique did you use to the find the bad data?

I've seen this in a FoxPro system that was prone to system failures (Power failures, DOS, Win 95/98 problems)

I found some bad data by making a browse and sorting on each numeric field in descending order. The bad data usually rose to the top. Then I deleted the records to get rid of them.

What you say was non numeric data where only numbers should be. It could have been a-Z or special characters like end of record/end of file.

Probably something happened awhile back when a restore from backup should have occurred, but didn't.

Hi Everybody, I did not intend to make the last post. I goofed and pressed ENTER to get a new line and it posted. How I found it was I decided to look at the browse form which I do not normally do. Would have found it long before if I had of. It was very obvious to spot the 6 Bars among all the other numeric data. I looked at the view form and it did NOT show up there, or not like it did on the browse. I deleted that part of the recored for it was all in ONE entry block, not scattered all over the place. Then I tried changing a name like before and it worked right. Then I went back to my old copy in A4 and found what data should have been there and re-entered the data correctly. Everything works like a charm now.

                    Thanks Again.
