Don't feel badly, it happens to all of us, and usually just about the time 'we know' what we're doing ! I'm slowly learning not to 'assume' anything, and to take the time to troubleshoot problems in a logical, but sometimes tedious, manner. But old habits are hard to beat!

I do hope Tom, John, Al and Scott read this since the problem I have solved myself but how do I explain my own crass stupidity - I know this is impossible without extreme embarrassment - so the truth will out.
For reasons I do not understand myself (I have used Alpha db software since A4V3) I displayed the first record in the database, minimised it and then tried to modify/create indexes. Obviously (ha-ha!!!) the creating/modify was not allowed whilst a form was active.
I am so sorry folks but thank you all so much for your comments. Put this lapse of mine down to advancing years (72), I am going to open another bottle of red!

Before doing all that, you might try copying your all you files except the alb, alm, alx, muf and dbg (if all exist) to another folder. Then create a new database in the new folder and, using the control panel, add the copied files to the new database. Then see if the new database works.

I have done the following:-
Copied the'.muf' file to a 5.5" floppy.
Deleted this file fom the database directory.
Rebooted the PC after a 10 min. wait.
Checked that the '.muf' file was not present - it wasn't.
Restarted A5V4, got same problem and noted that another '.muf' file had been created.

Following another suggestion (Tom, John or Al?) I created a new, small simple database and found I could create/amend indexes with no problem.

Thank you all for your help. I am now considering creating the existing databases in a new directory and importing the data from their present locations. A tedious task but I still am no nearer to understanding what has created my present problem with indexes.

One other thing you might try is deleting the appropriate .muf file for your database, rebooting the system(cold)and then see if that works. Good Luck....Scott Naples

Tom,
Missed that part of the thread and the response. Must have sounded very familiar to you. Hope the next advice doesn't sound quite as familiar.

Next thing I'd try after making sure I have a backup is to rename the cdx file with Windows Explorer after a cold boot. Then go into Alpha and see if you can manually create the index tags from the control panel as they were before. I believe Alpha will try to create the cdx file after you define the first tag.

Also, can you create a new table?? If so, can you add index tags to it?? If not, there might to be some kind of permissions things going on.

Something to try:
1) If you have a form autoloading, turn that off so no form automatically loads,just straight to the control panel
2) If you ahve an autoexec script, edit the script and put an end as the first script line.
3} Exit the app, turn your computer off ( cold boot ) turn it back on and open the app by loading Alpha first and then opening the particular app.
Does it happen then???

My existing shortcut was created on my current PC after I had loaded the A5V4 software. Only my data files were transferred from my old PC via a 5.5" floppy. I have found and changed the compatability tab as you sugested but still have my problem. Have also tried Win95 and Win 98 compatabilities again with no change. I restarted the PC after each change
My PC is a 'stand-alone' and I am the only user and so am completely baffled why I am being told there is another user of the database!

How to select win 2000 compatability:

Create a shorcut in XP for the program.

Right click the shortcut and choose properties. The third tab is compatability. There you can click the checkbox, then choose which compatability you desire in the drop down list.

Be sure to create a new shortcut rather than copy one from another operating system. A common problem is to move shortcuts from an older operating system to XP. It may not give you the desired results. It certainly won't give you the new features.

You mentioned that XP said another user had the files open. Be sure that another user on the XP system isn't connected to the Alpha database at the same time. It's very easy to have 2 users logged on at the same time with XP.

I still wonder if the problem source lies with Win XP?

I don't have XP. Have assumed from what others have said that this would be done by right clicking on the programs's icon and adjusting its properties. Your question is an XP question. Check it's help files, probably under an index on 'compatibility' or some such.

The answers to your two questions are "no". I used to do similar things when I used A4v6 (to me, a superior and easier to learn product, for more advanced db's without the need for programming). My preference with DOS, altough I am happy with Windows, will indicate my advancing years. After retirement (an acountant by profession) I designed several applications with this combination for smaller businesses.
