I installed a button for users to run stored post operations. I would like to allow the user to input a variable to be used by a stream of the post operations, but do not seem to pass a globel variable from my form screen to the post operations. Any suggestions?

On what action are you declaring the global variable?

You need to declare it, perhaps in the autoexec script, first as such:

dim global thevariablename as c

where c is a charater
where n is a numeric
etc...

OR:

Are you declaring it on the form itself?

At any rate when and if you have done this, place a value in the variable, and go to the interactive tab in the code editor. Type in

?thevariablename

If the value you typed in comes back, you are collecting the variable properly.

If an error comes back, you have not properly declared the variable.

Once you get the variable working properly, it should be available to use anywhere within Alpha until you close the database.

Remember to use the variable by preceding it with

var->thevariablename

in operations like the post you are attempting.

Charlie, pls post a working model here, with a description, step by step, showing which forms and operations are involved.

If you're simply trying to post a single value, stored in a variable, to records in the table, try a saved Update operation instead of a saved Post operation.

If you're trying to use the variable in an expression defined in the saved Post operation, we need to see your complete database to see the context in which it's running.

I took a look. I'm confused about your goal.

Your set has three tables. You are trying to update a field in the child table, based on values found in the grandchild table. However, the link between child and grandchild is not one to one, it's one to many, and you have more than one grandchild record for each child record. My question is this: which of the grandchild records do you want to pull values from to update the linked child table record? Since there's more than one, I'm confused. Maybe it would be best if you simply describe, in words, what it is you're attempting.

I am sorry for the confusion. I will try to clearify it.
In my actual data base, the 99+% of child records have only one grandchild record. I will need one more check in my logic that checks for "once old" always old.

My main goal is to get a variable passed from a form to a run operation, as I have several other operations that I would like to handle the same way.

Charlie,

I could not pass a variable to the operations genie.

However, it's relatively easy to:

1) build the operation with the genie, using a constant value;

2) record the script (low level)

3) modify the script to use a global variable instead of the constant.

Here's an example which uses your Begin form to update the value of 'Retention_Days' in all Table-B records.
