Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Disappearing DDD files

We have a client who has twice now contacted us with a system problem and when we have investigated all the DDD files are shown as zero bytes. Has anyone experienced this. This seems to have happened since adding an XP based machine as the second machine and running the application directly (not shadowed) over a peer to peer network.
Any help or advice would be gratefully received.

    RE: Disappearing DDD files

    Bob,

I've always assumed that the dictionary files are not modified during normal use of a finished application. I also believe that if the dictionary files are deleted by the user they'll be recreated by Alpha but will be empty. If these are accurate premises then you might investigate:

    1) does the user have the development version of Alpha Five and have they been making changes, or trying to make changes on their own?

    2) did they move the database to another folder, leaving the table dictionaries behind inadvertantly?

    3) did they do a partial backup, imagining it to be complete, followed by a wipe of the database folder and a restore of the partial copy?

Why aren't they running shadowed copies, after network optimization? They'd be much happier, I'd bet.

One other possibility that might be related to running directly over the network. Since the data dictionaries contain all of the form designs, etc, they would be open across the network to pass the designs from the server to the remote computer. If there is a network problem, this could leave the files open, resulting in a loss of data in the files. Also, I have no idea what would happen if two uses are using the same data dictionary files at the same time and one experiences a lockup. Would that also lockup the other user?

If you use network optimization, each user will have the data dictionaries loaded locally. Not only is this much faster, but much safer.

Thanks Tom & Jerry (I can't believe I just said that)

No they don't have a developers version and we are about to try them with a shadowed version to see if that rectifies the situation.

Optimizing is something that you absolutely should do. More important on a peer to peer than a server based network. However, the problem sounds like something else.
The fact that all the dictionary files got clobbered leads me to believe that Tom is on the right track. Does the end user have one of those individuals who likes to experiment with things?
Also, when the problem occurred, were they in the middle of using the app, or did it happen upon startup after a period of non use?? Either way, it might be interesting to see what the create and modified date-time stamp is on the files.
