Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problem with Printing non-standard pages

I am trying to setup several reports for non-standard page lengths. They will be printed to a dot-matrix printer, (Okidata or C-itoh). I can design the report and the preview appears to be fine. When I print however the output is not correct in length. I have tried inserting various top and bottom margins and adjusting the length. I have the detail section set to not suppress blank lines, but the report seems to suppress all lines after the last field prints. For example I want to print a detail only report of 3.5", I set the detail section length to 3.5". The report prints the first record fine but then prints the first line of the second record over the last line of the first. If I insert top and bottom margins of .5" and change the detail section length to 2.5" the report prints at smaller than 3.5" because it suppresses the blank lines after the last field prints. I am using the free trial version of 4.5. I have been using the Alpha 4 for years and am new to Alpha 5.Is the Alpha 5 incapable of non-standard lengths or I am missing something in the report setup. The documentation seems pretty straight forward on the setup procedure, but the program doesn't seem to function as per the documentation. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You

RE: Problem with Printing non-standard pages

    Jeff,

    Welcome to Windows.

In DOS printing was line oriented, and relatively easy to control. In Windows printing is page oriented, and typically each page is converted to an image in memory and then the image is sent to the printer. I fear you're in for some heavy sledding... lots of trial and error attempts is likely, since dot matrix printers remain line oriented.

One idea you might try if you're working with layouts that are only 3.5" tall, is to consider designing the report as a custom (albeit oversized) label, instead.

RE: Problem with Printing non-standard pages

Tom, thanks for the quick response. Trial and error is what I've been doing for a few hours. I setup a label to print the same information as in the report. The only problem is it is printing a blank label between each printed label. Do I have the label parameters out of synch with the printer? Label is setup for 3.5" x 8.5" label. Printer is set accordingly.

      Thanks

I suggest you reduce the dimensions of your label layout slightly, down to say 3" x 8" and see if that helps.

Tom, thanks for the help. I started experimenting with different printers. I had an old Panasonic in the closet, hooked it up and everything works. Both the label and the report. I'll have to see if the other printers have updated windows drivers or just use the panasonic. Thanks so much for your help.

The other thing to try is to set the page size to the printer in the printer folder. I use a dot matrix and print forms to a page size that is only 1" high.
