Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Letters Preview & Printing

    Philip,

there are probably several different things that can cause this. A typical problem is how Alpha Five handles layouts that won't 'fit' within the printable area on a single sheet of paper.

Each modern (inkjet and laserjet) printer has an unprintable area along the edges of each sheet (top, bottom, both sides). This is an area within which the printer is physically incapable of printing anything, and reduces the boundaries of your 'printable' area to something less than 8.5" x 11.0". If your unprintable area is 0.5" top and bottom, the 'printable' area is now 10.0", not 11" if you see what I mean. Anyway if your layout won't fit within the 10" printable area, then Alpha Five will usually 'pour' the unprinted portion over to the next page. If the portion of your layout that intrudes into the unprintable zone is blank, what you get is Alpha trying to print 'blank' material on the second sheet... i.e. and what you see is, yes, that's right, an empty page.

So, long story short, first thing I'd check is to verify that the physical boundaries of my letter layout will fit entirely within the printable area of my printer (top, bottom, both sides).

      Phil:

Tom, as always is right. I just did a mail merge to [God help us all] to 50th-year high school reunion classmates and experienced the very same problem as you.

My sucess was selecting 'Shrink to Fit' in the properties of the letter. I'm using an Epson Stylus 600 and that method fixed the problem.

If that doesn't get it DEBUG - the computer term for 'trial and error' trying virtually everything else.

Thanks fot the info (Tom is the expert) I will try your sujestion. I thought that the printer did not have anything to do with it as it was a problem in preview also, but that used the printer settings as well.

          Thank again

You're right, I had an occasion when I had no printer configured in Windows and Alpha refused to preview saying "Hey, you don't have a printer configured"

            Interesting....!

I Agree with THE OTHER Ken, for I found the SHRINK TO FIT to fix my problem. However I have not printed to printer but viewing it always gave me the error until I put the SHRINK TO FIT. Now it does not.

                The other Ken

I got it to work but don't ask me how. It dosen't give me the Shrink to fit option. I have a EpsonStylus Color 400 printer.

                Thanks for your input

                  I told you Phil

DEBUG will get it every time.

I always know what I DID to get it to work. Ha.

                    Ken & Phil,

Windows tries hard to synchronize the display on your monitor with the what will come out of the printer. It's one of the principal advantages of Windows over DOS.

It's my understanding that before Windows sends the report or letter to the printer it actually builds an image of the report or letter in memory. When you see a report preview Windows is trying to show you exactly what the output will be. If there's no default printer installed, it's ham strung.
