Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Missing Memo field data

I had the same problem 3 different times over 3 years with both Win 98 and XP. I fixed the problem in every case. I found that the problem was not in Alpha or Windows, but with a program running in the background for another Windows application. When you try to save data in the memo field, in conflicts with this other running program and you get deleted data. By running MSCONFIG and looking at the START menu of running programs you can see which ones are running by the check mark. Turn them all OFF and reboot. If Alpha works, then turn each app ON one at a time to find the one that caused the problem. You have to reboot each time so it is time consuming, but it fixes the problem. Apparently, Alpha has some files that conflict with other apps when both are trying to run together.

    RE: Missing Memo field data

I just wrote you a lengthy query, attempted to begin the second paragraph and everything disappeared. I tapped the Edit column, and lo, there wasn't any undo function. Most other programs provide successive undo-s, but not Alpha. I am confined to using a lap-top type keyboard whose layout predisposes to inadve]rtent command entries which have to be undone to proceed. Even intentional commands such as Indent corrupt this messaging system of Alpha's.
[space in five times to paragraph] Now to the reason for my note. I phoned Alpha over a week ago for help in restoring my Memo s. I enter the information, Save it, and when I return, it isn't there. My Alpha communicant gave me a hasty explanation of what I should do rattling off various .ext letters, and telling me to export my database, and then re-enter it into a new database...To this minute I don't have the faintest idea how to do this without losing everything. Going to the book was no help. When I look up MEMO I get a definition of the word. When I look up FILE I get the same thing. Why should an end-user not get a HOW-TO response to a query? Also, how about some PRINTED INSTRUCTIONS? I don't take shorthand, and impatience from the other end is counterproductive.

Go back and read my original message. This is the only way I was able to save the memo field data I entered. It was definetely caused by some program running in Windows. I was able to fix it every time by finding and turning off the program. Running MSCONFIG is the only way to find the intruding program. Keep in mind that once the data in the memo field is gone, it is gone forever. My solution does not restore lost data, it just corrects for new data in the memo field.

When I am running Alpha-5 there is NO PROGRAM RUNNING IN THE BACKGROUND.
Sadly, all the Memos I have saved since I first started using Alpha software have disappeared irretrievably.---M.S. Werner

Don't despair - least not till after you read the following reference in the CODE ARCHIVE section:

            RE: Missing Memo field data

The problem you describe (losing text after selecting the Edit 'column') is probably not Alpha's responsibility. More likely, it seems to me, is that the Edit command was running in your internet browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer, Opera, etc.). It's intended to be used to permit you to select and then cut, copy, or paste text in the current window, and is standard Windows fare. Once text is selected any subsequent keystroke will replace the selected text, causing it's immediate loss. This, too, is standard Windows behavior.

Concerning the problem you're having with saving memo field text, you might benefit from visiting Dr. Wayne's website at www.learn alpha.com. He's got an article there called something like "Memos and Browses That Work", which I think should be required reading for anyone trying to implement a data entry solution involving memo field text with Alpha Five.

If you find the terminology a bit unfamiliar the glossary at the back of the Alpha Five User's Guide is helpful.

I found that in Windows XP Professional there is a program in startup that is called desk98.exe. I diabled it and the memo problem stopped. The desk98 is used to start some programs faster, but I didn't really notice a change in the speed of starting up any of our programs.

Just some info someone might be looking for.

                Robert,
Thank you, you hit the nail right on the head. A client wanted some work done on their program, A5 V4.5, and I thought it would be an easy upgrade. I downloaded their whole directory onto my laptop to make the changes. Was I in for a surprise, the memo fields in an embedded browse disappeared. Both machines running Windows XP home edition. I tried more things than I want to admit to including message boerd suggestions regarding printer drivers and display acceleration - all to no avail. Then I found you.
I should also mention that I tried running the program from my desktop at home and had the same problem. I followed your suggestion and ran MSCONFIG - turned off everything in the startup tab and the program worked fine. To make this long story short, I found on my SONY laptop HKserv.exe and Jogserv2.exe were the culprits and opware32.exe the culprit on my desktop.
There are no problems with the embedded browse memo fields with these programs disabled. It took some time, but explains why different machines running the same operating system may or may not have problems.
Now for the big question - How do I remove these programs from the Startup?
                Thank You
                Dick Blanchard
PS I have upgraded this database to version 5 and have had no problems with the embedded memo field regardless of what has been running in the background.
