Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problem loading

When I attempt to run A5v4 I get error messages like this one in an "ODBC Driver Manager" window: "Failed to load resource DLL adbcint.dll"
Then follows a window called "Error starting program" with the message, "The ODBC32.DLL cannot start. Check the file to determine the problem"

Does anyone know what prevents A5v4 from even loading?
    Added info:
    (1) "ADBC" is a program written in A5v4
    (2) I find a reference to "adbcint.dll" in USER.DAT and have deleted that reference by running REGEDIT. It comes back into the USER.DAT (Registry file)
    (3) Reloading A5v4 doesn't help

Any help in solving this problem would be appreciated. RwP+

    RE: Problem loading

    Robert:

I think it's safe to say that your installation file is probably sound, and that something on your system is preventing Alpha Four from starting.

From your description, my hunch would be that a *.DLL has become either corrupt or unreadable.

When you say you have re-loaded the software, and it does not help, are you "uninstalling" the old files first? It is probable that Alpha's installation is setup so it does not overwrite existing files on the system, regardless whether they "work" or not. Try running the file "unwise.exe" found in the folder in which Alpha Five is installed. Then run the installation again.

If this doesn't resolve the issue, try writing down the name of the *.DLL's that cannot start (ODBC32.DLL, etc.), and delete them from the Windows/system directory. Then try re-installing Alpha Five.

Hope this helps narrow down the issue...

      RE: Problem loading

      Robert:

I should also point out that there is a file called "Install.log" in the Alpha Five directory that, when opened with notepad, lists the files that are installed by Alpha onto your system.

Those files don't show in the INSTALL.LOG.

See my reply to your other message.

          Thanks for the suggestion.
I ran the file "unwise.exe" and then reinstalled A5v4. Problem continues.

I will next try deleting the named files, as you suggest and then reinstalling A5v4.

          Thanks for your help.

            Robert:

adbcint.dll is not on my system, nor does it appear in my install.log file. Odbcint.dll is on my system and appears in my install.log file. Odbc32.dll is on my system, and is in my install.log.

Attached, hopefully, is my install.log file...

              Craig,
Your suggestion solved the problem. I found ODBC32.dll to be corrupt, so renamed it and reloaded W98SE. That solved the problem.
              Thanks for your help.

GTW, the adbc*.* files probably were associated with one of my applications for a veterans' group for which I am National Chaplain and Web Site Chairman. We are "The American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, Inc. (ADBC, for short). Philippine Defense Campaign circa 1941-1942. Try URL http://adbc-pow.org.

Again, thanks for your help. This is the first time I have used the Message Board and it has been great. Robert W. Phillips
