Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can A5 read joystick ports?

Specifically, is it possible for Alpha5 V4.5 (or v5) to detect the joystick buttons (from the old DB15 style or USB joystick), or even better, can it read the analog joystick values?

For example, one could connect a thermistor to the joystick port, read the value and have Alpha convert it to the actual temperature. That's right... I want a $2000 thermometer! ;-) Actualy, I have other uses in mind, this was just an example.

    Thanks,
    Bob Emery

ssssoooooo... I guess that's a no to the idea of 'real-time data aquisition via native PC hardware and Alpha Five'... *glances in marketing's direction*... hmmm

Perhaps I'm thinking a bit too far outside of the box. ;-)

Bob, don't know much on this subject. However, others have had good luck connecting barcode readers using serial ports, and some sort of 'wedge' device. If this is similar to what you are thinking of you might search for threads on barcode readers or wedges.

The wedge is not an analog device, it's output from a card or label
reader is the same as that of a keyboard.

RE: Can A5 read joystick ports?

Tom, I've been looking at barcode stuff too, and while it is great for data-entry, especially inventory stuff and real-time tracking, it's not what I'm looking for in this case.

The joystick port present in most PCs basically provides us with at least two analog-to-digital convertors and two digital (on/off) inputs, using low 5 volt signals. The analog inputs can be anywhere from 0 to 5 volts, and somewhere in windows, some driver reads that voltage level as a number from 0 to n, where n is limited by the number of bits in the hardware ADC. For example, a 16 bit ADC would provide 2^16, or 65536 distinct voltage levels, so n could be 0-65535. I'm not sure what the actual hardware or driver is capable of and I don't know how windows handles it. Perhaps a small TSR type program could 'feed' Alpha5 this joystick data?

If Alpha could read the 'joystick' values, and you use a forms OnTimer event to, for instance, detect a joystick button press, triggering it to record voltage level data from one or both inputs for x amount of time, or until some level is achieved, or whatever... You could then provide some nice graphical test data, not unlike a digital storage oscilloscope.

            Cool idea, no?
            Thanks for the feedback guys,
