Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Corrupt Form?

    Corrupt Form?

I have an application that has a set and 3 underlying tables. I created a form based on the set and it has been working fine for about a year. Today, each time the form is entered and any task on it is started, it locks up the program. A Ctl-Alt-Del shows Alpha 5 is "Not Responding". Other forms, reports, browses, and operations seem to work.
How can I resolve the problem? I have been deleting buttons and fields on this form gradually trying to find the culprit with out any luck. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

    RE: Corrupt Form?

    David,

I would first try and determine that it is the form and not something else. I would open the default form and see if that has problems. If it does, I would suspect corrupt data or a corrupt index. Otherwise, I would copy the form, and start by removing the objects on the form. If the form works fine, add back half of the removed objects, and keep removing and or adding back objects until you can tell which one it is.

My main suspicion would be a calculated field or a variable.

    Good luck.

      RE: Corrupt Form?

      Jay,
The default form and the other forms created on that set worked, as did the browses which indicated to me it was the form and not the data. I did as you suggested using smaller percentages of objects on the form but the same concept. I tested the form after each move. I copied ALL of the objects on the form that would not work to a new one - no changes in any of the objects was made except that a 1 character variable was recreated on the new form. Now this re-constituted form works fine. Thanks. Have you any ideas how this occurred or where the problem could be? Could it have been my 1 character variable?
      Thanks again

        RE: Corrupt Form?

        Dave,

Be sure to compact the database after any changes. It does sound like the form was corrupted, which would indicate that the set data dictionary files were damaged in some way. All of the form designs are saved in the data dictionaries. If you have a backup from a time where everything in the set worked, copy the set, sem, and sex files from the backup to the working directory (a set only has data dictionaries, since all data is in the tables). This would restore the form to an original condition. If the form was based on a table, copy the ddd, ddm, and ddx files which are the table data dictionaries.

As for the problem being the form variable, if the table lost the variable definition, this would cause an error message, but should not lockup the program. However, if you have defined another variable with the same name somewhere else and that variable is active, that could cause a problem.
