Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Using a button to add a child record

    I am creating an order entry app for a (very) small restaurant and have created my set with the invoice number, table number, server name, etc in the Primary Table. The Child Table has the order details of Item code, description, price etc.

    Everything is working wonderfully with the Item Code pulling the description & price from a database lookup when the user types the Item Code into the embeded browse.

    However, what I would like to do is have a series of buttons on the Parent Form that automatically add the child record with the Item Code, Description, and Price for a given food item. This would mean that the server could just click on "Coke" to order a Coke instead of having to type it in.

    This would simplify things greatly for the server just needing to click a few buttons to place an order, rather than having to type in codes for each of those items.

    What code should I use on the button to add these child records? Do I need to somehow refresh the Form after the record is added to make it work?

    If it matters, my Primary Table is "Tea Sales Header" and my only Child Table is "Tea Sales Details" and the set is "Tea Room Sales"

    Thank you so much for the help.

    RE: Using a button to add a child record

    Jeff, there are probably several different ways to approach this.

    The first that comes mind here is using a table level field rule for the Item_no field to 'lookup' the desired item from a list you keep in a separate table, showing all items that are on the menu. The user looks it up, and picks it off the list. The field rule can also 'fill in' the related fields you mention (description, price, etc.). This would be called a table lookup field rule in Alpha Five terminology and is discussed in Ch. 4 of the User's Guide I believe.

      RE: Using a button to add a child record

      Thank you for the quick reply Tom.

      I have already figured out how to do the table lookup and that is working properly.

      What I would like to do is to use buttons on the form to add the record automatically to the child table to prevent the server from having to use "multiple clicks" to order the items.

      I have attached a copy of the rough layout that I am experimenting with. Take a look at the form "Table 1" and you will see what I mean.

      I appreciate any suggestions anyone may have.

        Jeff, here's an example I've built into the Coke button on your form. Unzip the attachment to a separate folder. Do not mix it with your development work.

        By the way, I strongly recommend that you stop using blank spaces in the names of your tables (or any other object in the alpha Five system). Alpha Five does a good job of dealing with blanks, but is not perfect.

          Jeff,

          Here's another idea, which may save a few keystrokes.

          I've added a button to your Table_1 form.

          Unzip the attachment to a separate folder. Do not mix it with your development work.

            Tom,

            Thanks for sticking with this. I've tried your suggestion from the first attachment and you've done it! It works great. I am however having trouble with the refresh of the browse and am getting the following error:

            Script:OnPush line:39
            :Table_1:Browse1.refresh()
            Argument is incorrect data type

            There is not attachment on your second reply. Can you try again?

                :Table_1:Browse1.refresh()

                Check typing.

                This should be:

                Colon
                Formname
                colon
                browse object name
                period
                refresh()

                  RE: Using a button to add a child record

                  Tom,

                  Thank you so much for your help. I've tried extending the coke button to the salad button and they are both now working perfectly. I've been unable to duplicate the error I was gettting before after using your second post so I'm happy as can be.

                  As an FYI, I've adjusted the scirpt a bit to automatically use 1 as the Quantity and then the server can just press the button repeatedly for as many orders she wants for that item. I don't care if multiple rows show up for the same item on the screen and I can use totalling on the receipt to show the total of that item ordered.

                  Thank you also for the tip on not using spacing on the tables, etc. I will start doing that in the future!

                  You are a life saver.
