I have used the following expression for some time

dim jn as c
jn=ui_get_text("Move Directly to a Job Number","Enter the Job Number")
parentform.find(jn)

The table has always been ordered by Job Number Ascending

Now it is ordered decending and this does not work.

Any suggestions why

What if the user changes the order to their liking?
Is there a universal way?

If the user switches to another index or query, you will have to reset the index to the correct index before the find and then switch it back after the find. Lets say that the index you want for the find is called "jobnum"

idx = tbl.index_primary_put("jobnum")
parentform.find(invert(jn))
tbl.index_primary_put(idx_org)

The idx_org finds a pointer for the current index. The if statement checks for a value from the text box, since there is no point in doing a find for a blank value. Set the index to jobnum before the find, and use the index pointer to set it back to whatever the user selected after the find.

The only issue that can come up occurs if the index or query in place before the find has a filter that excludes the record you want. The find will get the record, but the display will switch to the next allowable record after the other index is reactivated. There are a couple answers to this. The easiest is just switch the index to "jobnum" and leave it there. This is what I usually do. Or if you want to get fancy and have no filtered indexes, you can check if idx_org is a query using idx_org.type_get(). Only reset the index if idx_org is not a query.
