Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

displaying dba path from the status bar

I have a test dba and the real running one and sometimes it is confusing which dba I am working on. The only thing I could see is the dbf file or the form name. The only thing I could think of is just to see it from the Table/Set of the control panel. Is there a way I could display the whole path of the dbf/form at the status bar?

    Appreciate any help. Thanks.

RE: displaying dba path from the status bar

    Trixie,

I do this in the OnActivate event of my Main Menu form:

    Code:
    dim global homefolder as c
    homefolder = A_DB_CURRENT_PATH
    :A5.window_title = "Membership. [Using Data in : "+homefolder+"]"
This puts the current database path in the title bar.

You could write the same information to the status bar using the xbasic commands statusbar.clear(), statusbar.set_text(). Check it out in the Xbasic Ref. manual.

RE: displaying dba path from the status bar

      Hi Tom!

I was wondering if A5 has some setup properties that I could have the path displayed at the title bar or status bar. This is while I am working on my dba not when the dba is running.

      Thanks again. Trixie.

        Not that I know of.

However, as I've shown, the script to do the same thing is easy to implement at least on a form by form basis.

In my own work I keep the entire collection files that represents a single database in a single folder. Occasionally I will put another copy in a second folder, using a different foldername to distinguish it. I can then try out ideas in the second folder without messing up the 'real' database.

If you set the option to display 'details' the control panel view of the tables and sets in your database will show the complete path to each. Perhaps this will help you during development, without changing runtime behavior.

We are doing the same thing. I have 2 folders for the dba. The 2nd I use often for testing only, just like you said, so that I won't be messing up the real one. Anyway, sometimes, when I am working on a form/table, there is a little voice telling me, if I am in the testing folder or the 'real' dba...hmmm...so, that's why I would like to know if there is a setting I could differentiate the two.

          Thanks again.

The control panel is easy to reach during development.

If you set the option to view details, you can see the complete path to each table.

Sounds like an easy way for you to know without having to close the database and reopen it.

RE: displaying dba path from the status bar

You could create a shortcut on your desktop (or wherever) to each copy of the application and use the -TITLE command line switch to set the Alpha Five window title accrdingly.

Your shortcut target would look something like:
              "C:\Program Files\A5V4\Alpha5.exe" -Title="This is My Title" c:\database.adb

The limitation here is that if you close the current database but leave A5 open, the title will still reflect the previous application.

                Thank you all.

I guess the control panel is the easiest one to use.

I use lenny's idea of different shortcuts and also change the color of the main menu in the development versions.
