Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    FIND RECORD IN FORM

I have a form set up for voter information and set up using action of findind a voter through query by form.

If I lookup a name such a Smith I get all the Smiths, but when I try to look up Lewis, it will not find Lewis. I found I had to go back to main table and use Query to show all arrange them in alpha order and then go to the form and search for the next name.

Question: Is there a way to say in the form and search for many different names you want to make changes on or do you have to resort to this operation?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    RE: FIND RECORD IN FORM

    Nip:

I have a button on my form called 'Find' with this script attached.
    ___________
    dim global job as c
    parentform.index_set("Name")
job = ui_get_text( "Who Ya Lookin' For?", "",job)
    IF job = ""
    END
    END IF
    parent.find(job)
    end
    _______________
second line sets the index to last name
    UI gets the name
parent.find(job) takes you to the record.
Unlike the query by form, there's no need for the 'show all'

The index set puts the table in that index and it' still active when the operation is over.

Is this maybe what you want?

      RE: FIND RECORD IN FORM

I'm not sure why it is acting that way. I just went to a client table and did a query-by-form on one name (38 matches found) then simply started another query-by-form on a different name and it worked fine (11 found).

Is it possible that either "Lewis" is really " Lewis" with a leading blank space or that Lewis doesn't exist?

Also, my preference is to use an index such as:
      trim( last_name ) + " " + first_name

Then create a Find button that sets this index (in case it hasn't already been set) and starts a Find-by-key operation that prompts the user for a name. This allows the user to type "smith j" to locate the first Smith whose first name starts with a "J" and they can PageDown from there if necessary. Of course, they could also type the complete first name to be more specific.

I prefer this method for two reasons: (1) I think it's easier for most users and (2) it's faster than a query - especially on large tables.

Apparently Ken and I were typing at the same time. My idea is the same as Ken's except I prefer the index with last name AND first name. (With a space between them)

Your suggestion worked fine. Thank you very much. I tried Trim(name) as I have the entire name in that field called name.

I created another table called 10Septvtr and tried your suggestion, but it did not work. It has the same Name field, but it does not index properly. Is this because I am in the same control panel?

          Any help would be appreciated.

          Thanks again.

            Nip,

I'm not sure your table name can begin with anything other than a letter.

              RE: FIND RECORD IN FORM

              NIP and guys....

If the name field holds the ENTIRE name, is a data-entry convention in place that would be i.e. 'Last'[space or comma]'first' throughout the table? Not a good idea if it is structured that way -- causes these kinds of problems down the road when you try to find or filter.

Consider splitting out the last and first names to seperate fields.

In Cal's example, maybe alltrim() would be better to remove an inadvertant blank space in front of the name and behind it. As in the ' Lewis' debauchle example, Cal suggests.

              Just some more thoughts
