Report question

I have a Student table that has their last name, first name, etc., plus the names of their parents. I have one record for each student, so a family with 4 kids has 4 records (I have also considered making this a one-many set, with the family name as the link field, and each student as a record in the child).

I want to have a report that will look like this (parents are Mary and John, kids are Bob, Carol, Ted, Alice)

Smith, Mary - John
123 Main St.
Bob, Carol, Ted, Alice

The problem is how to put all the kids' names on one line.

Any thoughts??

XBasic.

Open the first file ordered so all of the parent names are grouped, read the records in one at a time.

As long as the parent name is the same, assemble a string to hold the names you want on one line, when the parent name changes, write a record out to a new file with a field for the parent name, fields for whatever other data you wish to report, and a field for the string holding all of the kids's names.

Then build your report off of the new table.

Bill, I think Paul is on the right track. I'd use an intermediate, temporary, table. Step through the original table collecting the information on a family, and then store it all in one record in the temp table. Base the report on the temp table.

Another possibility that might work as long as you have a unique element for each student record designating a family is this:
Create a UDF that reads the student records for a particular family and builds a string. Then on your report have a group on the unique family designator, no detail section and print the family info on the group footer and use the UDF to get the child string.
