Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: Sorting a report by address

This time I copied and pasted the expression you sent me. I still don't know what the difference is, but it evaluated ok.

When I tried to run preview I got the message:

    "Error occurred parsing order expression.
    Too many parameters."

If the expression is too long, can it be done with the check to see if the first character in the field is a number. I can live without that.

    Thanks,

      Ron,

I don't think the expression is too long. Please zip a complete copy of your database and post it here, or, if privacy is an issue, email it to me. I won't send it anywhere!

I'll bet something silly is happening, and I can't debug it for you without seeing it.

When you say a complete copy what files do you need?

RE: Sorting a report by address

          Ron,

The recommended arrangement is to place all files related to a single database in a single folder. If this is what you've done then zip and forward the entire folder.

The complete database does not include the Alpha Five program files, just the files listed in Appendix 3 of the User's Guide. This includes the tables, indexes, memo files, table dictionary files, sets (including dictionary and indexes), the database itself (ADB, ALB, ALM, and ALX files).

Here's an easy test. Copy what you think is the complete database collection to a new folder. Then open the database there. If it will run, then you've got everything I need, so send them all here. If it won't run in the second folder on your machine, then it won't run here either, so there'd be no point in sending it until you get the copy working. Ok?

Here is the zipped file 'ronlach', that we have been trying to produce as a report sorted by address.

RE: Sorting a report by address

Ron, there were two report designs in your database. You did not say which was troubling you.

Assuming we're talking about 'Newton prospect by street' I don't see any problem. What should I be seeing here? The preview looks fine, grouped by City, then sorted by street, then sorted by street number. Isn't that what you wanted?

I'm using Alpha Five, Vers 4.5 (build 266) and a Win98 SE box.

RE: Sorting a report by address

So I looked and saw that it is as you say. Could I have done something moving the files around? I am sure it was not doing that before.

Whatever, thanks a lot for your help.

I was going to add two more rows to the detail, Note and Note2. If these are empty will the detail be condensed -- that is I don't want all that empty space on the page when there is no information?

RE: Sorting a report by address

                  You're welcome. Glad it's working.

It's possible to set a 'shrink region' property of the details band in your report. This should tighten things up, unless you put an explanatory label in front of each of the new fields you want to print. The labels will, of course, print, even if the note or note1 fields are, themselves, empty.
