Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

how to default an index selection

Is it possible to set the default selection in the index window when I switch from Form to Browse (F8) and back to Form again?

The selection stays when I am in either Form view or Browse view BUT when I switched views, the Index looses the selection I made before.

    Appreciate any suggestions.

RE: how to default an index selection

Are you talking about keeping the same index sort order in place as you switch between form and browse, or are you talking about keeping the same selected record in focus as you switch between form and browse ?

RE: how to default an index selection

I am talking about the second one....about keeping the same selected record in the Index dialog box in focus when I switch between form and browse views.

Do you think I would be able to do this?

RE: how to default an index selection

I am an Alpha user newbie and just wanted to know if there is another way I could be able to perform this task. Let me know also if I stated the problem clearly or not.

        Any help is appreciated.

          Yes.

OPen the default form for the table, find a record, then toggle to the default browse. The same record should still be 'in focus'. Is this what you see ?

RE: how to default an index selection

I know what you are talking about and it did just that. However, what I am trying to do is setting the focus on the INDEX and not on the record.

When I am on the form, I click on the Index button and selected an Index entry. Then use the Find by Key button, then it finds a record I want, then I do toggle (F8) to the browse view to see other records & switch back (F8) to forms view. This is where I am having a problem, because I lose the selected key from the Index button. It reverts to the first entry on the Index. So, I have to set the Index again...select record...browse view...etc...

I hope I cleared up what I really wanted to do. Thanks for any help.

RE: how to default an index selection

              Ok, that's clear.

              Now, try what I suggested.

Open the default form for your table.
Set the index. (Ctrl - I)
Do the find by key. (Ctrl - K)
Toggle to browse using the default browse. (F8)

The same 'found' record should be in focus.

Now toggle back to the form. (F8)

The same 'found' record should remain in focus.

The same index should still be controlling the display order.

You should be able to do another find by key, without having to specify the desired index again.

Once you confirm this sequence, it will suggest that something in your form or your browse is re-setting the index to something other than the index you areusing in the find by key, so look there to find and fix it.

                Trixie,

Are you familiar with the 'default' form for a table?

It's NOT the form you built or customized, ok ?

RE: how to default an index selection

Thank you so much. Your suggestion is what I want to do.

However, I am not clear on your last paragraph. Can you please explain more?

What am I suppose to look for? I don't want to use the default browse view as I have already created a form for it and on the default browse view, not all of my fields can be viewed.

                  Again, thanks!!!

                    Trixie,

How about posting a zipped copy of your database here (or emailing it to me)? Maybe I can suggest something specific. Be sure to include a text file explaining the exact sequence required to see the problem, and a careful description of exactly how you would prefer it to behave.

RE: how to default an index selection

Unfortunately, I couldn't zip the dba bec it is too large. However, I have been doing the Alpha tutorial and it seems to do the procedure that I want. I am just wondering why I couldn't see what it is wrong with the dba that I am working on. I have also included the txt file that contains the steps and where I encounter my problem.

                      Hope this helps. Thanks again!

RE: how to default an index selection

                        Trixie,

If you open the 'Client_trans_entry' form in design mode, and check the Properties of the form you will find that there are no Filter or Order sequences embedded in the Order/Filter properties for either the parent table or the linked child table.

So, if the user selects a different index using Ctrl-I, that index will remain 'current' and will continue to control the display sequence for the form until the user changes it to something else. A change would occur if the user picked another index by using Ctrl-I again, or if the user ran a query. It could also be changed if the user toggles to a named browse form and the named browse form has a 'different' display order embedded in it.

These are the things I'd check if I were you. I cannot offer more advice without seeing your app. -- tom

RE: how to default an index selection

I have compared the properties of the form that I sent to you and the current forms I have trouble with. They don't have the filter or Order sequences embedded in them. So, I guess this is not the one. I just thought how weird this could be...as to not having to see a pattern between the two dba. I have been trying to open the two dbas and going to one by one on the properties as well as on the scripts. I think that there is something more that I am missing.

Do you have anymore ideas? I am really gratefull for all the help you have suggested.

                            Last idea.

Zip your entire database and email it to me. With a note explaining which form and keystroke sequence I should examine.
