Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    RE: Customer ID linck

    Lev, are you entering a new record in the invoice form you are opening?

    Tom Cone wrote some beatutiful examples for passing values between forms in the code archive

    something like:

    f=form.load("invoices")
    f.new_record()
    f.customer_number.value="123456"
    f.customername.value="John Smith"
    f.activate()

    or
    f.customer_number.value=parentform:customer_number.value
    f.customer_name=parentform:customer_name.value
    f.activate()

        RE: Customer ID linck

        Yes, Lev, "customer name" and "customer number" were ficticious field names I used for the example, that you would replace with your own actual field names - note the use of the word "value" and note that I forgot to put it in the second line of my example!

        you are addressing objects on the two forms

        say your main form and the form you are loading have field objects called "customer number" and "customer name" then the use of "value" refers to the current value of the form:field:object

        f=form.load("newform")
        f:customer_number.value=parentform:customer_number.value
        f:customer_name.value=parentform:customer_name.value
        f:activate()

          RE: Customer ID linck

          I wrote my first example too fast - note the differences:

          f.customer_number.value [incorrect]
          f:customer_number.value [correct]

          also, in my second example I forgot to say f.new_record()

          so:

          f=form.load("newformname")
          f.new_record()
          f:customer_number.value=parentform:customer_number.value
          f.activate()

              RE: Customer ID linck

              If you are entering a new record for a child, then you might also have other child tables you would want to add new records to - so, say you have two children - "charges" and "payments" - on your main form you could put two buttons - "New Charge" and "New Payment" - then at the onpush event for the button put the code I sent - but have the code load the appropriate form - each form would be made for a particular table.

              If you want them to have a separate form to edit child records, you could put the child tables in embedded browses on your main form and similar code at the onrowdoubleclick event to load that record in an edit form.

              PS: I am using customer_number in the script I sent, but the actual name there should be the primary linking field name in your set - usually customer_number or the equivalent.

                That make sense
                I have tried but what I get is that form is loaded but fields are blank , so it create new record but did not field up fields.
                You see the DB I am working on is for my wife practice
                and when she select patient from patient.dbf what i need is that she can click on the button call billing and open set call billing which has two table set patienhead which is a copy of the fields form patient.dbf and imbedded billing table
                in browser form.
                So what I was looking for is when she click on billing button it should open billing form and patient info should be there for this patient which she had open in patient form..

                Plus I halve other use for this particular scrip the only think
                I need to make it work..

                Thanx

                  RE: Customer ID linck

                  Lev - a form opened as a new record is SUPPOSED to be blank as it is a new, empty record that you are going to fill in.

                  I suggest that you open the "Invoice" program that comes with Alpha - study the sets and the forms and which sets they use.

                    RE: Customer ID linck

                    I had look at the Invoice
                    I can get Fill in info using lookup window
                    it is in place already but I want to have patient info automatically be in as soon as form is loaded the rest of the info she will fill in as she go, main point of this is to be in patient table select a patient and click on the button patient billing form pops on the screen and upper portion of the form (patient name address DOB etc) to be there.
                    I can do this using lookup window with no problems

                    Have any Ideas?

                      RE: Customer ID linck

                      when you load the form, in addtion to filling in the customer number, also fill in hte rest of the info you want the same way - the info is probably alreay available in your main form, since you are at that customer

                      p=parentform.this()
                      like f=form.load("formname")
                      f:customer_number.value=p:customer_number.value
                      f:customer_name.value=p:customer_name.value
                      etc.

                          RE: Customer ID linck

                          sorry -

                          p=parentform.this() 'incorrect
                          p=parentform.this 'correct

                          this is just a way to not have to keep typing parentform over and over when you want to transfer a lot of the field valiues of parentform to the newform - it makes a pointer to parentform

                          like f=form.load("formname")
                          f:customer_number.value=p:customer_number.value
                          f:customer_name.value=p:customer_name.value
                          etc.
