Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

No Alpha 5 in XP START Menu

I did a "clean install" of Windows XP PRO. I set up two users, myself as administrator, secretary as Limited. I installed Alpha Five ver. 4.03, updated to ver. 4.5, installed patch to make it Build 266. I did all this from my administrator user. I did this with many other programs as well. When I switched users to the secretary, all the other program files are in the Windows XP START>PROGRAMS Menu, except Alpha Five. I switched the secretary to Administrator type, rebooted, still not there. I then went to Explorer, found the Alpha Five folder, went to the Alpha5.exe, double clicked, and opened the program (it did request the serial number--which I had given when I installed it from my user name). The program then loaded fine, however the Alpha Five folder still does not appear in the START>PROGRAMS folder. Any suggestions?

I think I understand what you are trying to do. Give this a try:

While logged in as administrator, navigate to c:,documents and settings, administrator, start menu, programs. Find the Alpha five program group and copy it (control+c). Navigate back to c:, documents and settings, all users, start menu, programs. Paste (control+v) the Alpha five program group there. Log off and log back on as the person with limited rights and you should see Alpha 5 program now.

In the future.. if you install a program and you want all other users of the computer to use the same program.. install using the control panel's "Add / Remove Programs".

This makes it available for all users... usually.

And you should do this from an administrator level account too BTW.

I found nothing will help solve the problem other than making the secretary's status to "administrator" rather than "limited." The other "fixes" worked only until the system was rebooted. I spoket to someone at Alpha Software and he said that was the only way to get it to work. Alpha Five ver. 4, Build 266, is the only program on the system with WINDOWS XP Pro that behaves this way.

            I agree with Wayne.

I cannot find any way that a non-administrator can run Alpha in XP. This is a real pain when distributing a runtime app.

I think it can be done by meddling with the registry. Anyone out there know of a solution.

I experienced this same problem when I installed an app on a Win2K machine. The way I got around it was to uninstall it and changed my install routine to install it in the C:\ (root directory) rather than in the c:\Program files directory. You might try that to see if it works for you on XP. (I use the Wise Installmaker program for my distribution apps and it is real easy to change the install directory.
