Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Field Rules not saving

I have a set that will not save any field rules at the set or at table level. I did finally get one table to save a couple of field rules but they will not go to the set level. this is a set and tables we have been using for several years and it just started this a few weeks ago. At first the field rules just dissappeared a couple of times and had to be put back in. Then they dissappeared and could not be put in at all. It appears to save them and when you go back to look at them they are gone. This set has an auot increment field and it now will not even let us ;ut this in manually. This is running on a network with Windows XP.

    Byron,

In Version 4 of Alpha Five I don't believe there are field rules for sets, per se. You build them for the tables, one at a time.

I have tried re-evaluating the field rules and that does not help. Any suggestions?

Byron, it's my understanding the field rules for a table are saved in the data dictionary files for that table. The solution to your problem is probably going to involve figuring out why your data dictionary files are being corrupted or over-written. There are lots of different ways such a thing might happen.

One approach to solving this would be to verify that your field rules are intact and functioning correctly on your 'development' version of the database. You do have a 'development' version, right? i.e. a copy of your actual database, and not the real database, itself. Once you verify that the field rules in your development version are working correctly you can copy them to your server. At that point you should probably do a network optimize all over again to migrate the latest version of the dictionary files to each work station.

        Does this make sense?

Ok I tried that and it still won't save field rules. I finally did get the primary table to save the auto increment,(this was before I copied the DD files) but it will not work at the set level or the child table. any more thoughts?

            Byron,

In Version Four of Alpha Five there are no set level field rules. If you're coming from Alpha Four this will seem like a step backwards.

You must define the rules for each table, separately. While you may decide later on to link a table to another, there is no such thing as a 'child' table in field rules.

Of course, once defined you must save them. Edits to field rules are not automatically saved. I use the little icon that resembles a floppy disk to do this.
