Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Parent Browse Jumps

I have a parent browse on a form to select records. When I enter a new record, or change records, the parent browse will jump to another record, but the form stays on the correct record. And when the record is saved, the parent browse resets to the proper record.

Functionally, it is not a problem, but aesthetically (sp) it is annoying.

    Ideas?

    Tom

I suppose I could hide the browse when the form is in Change or Enter Mode, then have the OnSave show it.

To what event would I attach the the script to browse1.hide()?

    Other approaches welcome.

      Hi Tom,

What exactly do you mean by a parent browse?

        Hi Bill,

I have a form based on a set. The parent table of the set is contained in the browse. This way, I can click on the clientname in the browse, and go directly to that record.

I also have a tabbed object on the form which presents the parent data. When entering or editing this data, the browse pointer jumps around, but when I save all is okay.

The jumping pointer in the browse is annoying. It appears that the highlighted record is getting changed, but not so.

        Have you seen this behavior?

          Tom,

I haven't seen this behavior and I do use browses for navigation, although usually for simple tables rather than sets.

Is it possible that one or more of the fields on the tabbed object is from a child table? I could see the jumping around then.

            RE: Parent Browse Jumps

I've seen this issue once or twice but Bill has a point, maybe it had to do with child records. It also probably has to do with the fact that the Enter occurs in the form but the browse is based on the table and doesn't quite know what to do when the table goes into 'Enter' mode. (How's that for a technical explanation?)

To hide the browse, you could put a simple script in the OnEnter (or OnChange) event of the form BUT the problem is UNhiding it. There is no clean way to do it if the user presses the ESC key to cancel the Enter. If the changes are saved, there is an OnSave event that can be used but you would need to Trace Events and check each form to see what event could be used (if any) to handle the ESC issue.

A simpler way might be to create another form that pops up for data entry when the user presses a "New" button that you create. You could also put a "New" button on a user defined menu or toolbar.

              Bill,

No child records in browse, but good try - at first I thougth that was it.

              Cal,

Yes, I'll create an input form. I did this once, but had such a hard time refreshing or resynching and ending up with the correct record, I gave up.

                Hi to you both,

A data entry form is a good idea. You could also turn that solution upside down and have a dialog form with an embedded browse for navagation. A button on the data entry form calls the dialog, user navagates by double clicking on a row which closes the dialog and runs a find on the calling form to go to the selected record.

I have had to write a bunch of these this summer because I ran out of space on my data entry forms for the embedded navagational browse object. (The college needed a "tiny change" and it ate my summer!)

Tom, if you want a working example I'll put one together for you.

A "working example" would be very much appreciated.

                  Thanks

                          RE: Parent Browse Jumps

There is a menu bar item called "browse titles and subtitles".

                          Push it.

It plays a script called "browse titles" which uses pointers initialized in the auto exec. Close the edit titles form. Run the script from the control panel and you get an error as the script tests for the existence of the necessary pointers.

                              Tom,

Does this jump go away if you put the browse into record order? This is sort of a classic problem with indexes when you are changing the indexed item.

Can you turn off updates to the browse until after the record is entered?
