Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Saved Ops & Scripts

    The attached .ZIP file contains a small application example with 4 basic files: CONST - System control file which only conatins the company name, CUSTS - customer master file with 3 customers (1, 2, & 3), INVDTL - an invoice detail file for invoice entry, and the INVHIS file for invoice history.

    There are only 3 options on the MENUMAIN screen, change custs, enter invoices, and post.

    I created 3 saved ops; APPEND which append the INVDTL file to INVHIS, POST which post the invoice $$$ to customer balance, and RESET which deletes the records in INVDTL after APPEND and POST.

    Here's the rub - I created a script "UPDATE" which combines the 3 saved operations. It works fine but I'm trying to get rid of the "successful completion" and "are you sure" messages.

    I'd appreciate any constructive critique(s) you all may have. By seeing what someone else would do to correct this problem, I'm certain it will shed a great deal of light on some other Alpha/5 issues I have.

    Thanks,

    Lar :-)

    Larry,

    I think maybe you're going to be happy with this.

    Check out the discussion of

    Operation Type.run_silent()

    at about pg 267 of the Xbasic Ref. Manual.

    Then modify your update script to look like this:
    Code:
    Append.Run_Silent("append@c:invhis.dbf")
    Post.Run_Silent("post@c:custs.dbf")
    Mark.Run_Silent("reset@c:invdtl.dbf")
    I tried to test it here, but the details table you included in the zip file was empty to begin with. However, I think this is going to work just fine.

        RE: Saved Ops & Scripts

        Larry,

        I'm glad you got it going, silently!

        Some have complained about the docs for Alpha Five, Version 4, and I'll concede it takes a while to get used to where things are to be found, especially in the Xbasic Reference Manual. However, I recommend you get thoroughly acquainted with it, even if parts of it don't make much sense yet. Just understanding how the darn thing is organized will be a big help.

        The index to the Xbasic Ref. Manual is another sore point. Sometimes things are indexed on Nouns, and others are indexed on Verbs. I've learned to check both possibilities.

        For example in looking for an entry that might tell me how to run a saved operation silently, I first looked under Operations. Found nothing, zip, nada. Then I looked under Post and found
        Code:
        Post.run()
        post.run_silent()

        When I looked under Append I found

        Code:
        Append.run()
        Append.run_silent()

        I then began to see a bit of a pattern.

        Hope this helps.
