Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Mortgage design issues

    Hi There!

My name is Yoly, and I'm a new user of Alpha 5 ver 4.5 struggling with tables and sets, just to begin with.

Let me tell you briefly what I'm trying to do:
First of all the company that I'm working for is a Mortgage company whom would love to use Alpha 5 to organize, manage and bill their clients.
So far I have created the tables with information such as: Corporation name, address, and phone. As well as Guarantor and Co-guarantor with the REPEAT it information of addresses, phone and so on.
On my first attempt to create a set I got the error "repeat it fields are ,,,,," I forgot the rest of it but I pretty sure you guys are familiar with it.

    Questions:
    1. Do I have to create Tables with as much information as I can from the different entries (Corporation, Guarantor, co-guarantor, insurance, loan info, etc) in order to create the sets?

    2. How does a repeat field affects the creation of set and forms. And even better how can I handle this?

    3. If I want to create a window to enter data, view it and change date. Do I create a Form, a browse or a report and why?

    4. If I want to create a Menu at the begining (when the user first open Alpha 5) where Do I start looking for the right tools to accomplish this?

Thank You all for the time to read this questions and to answer them if possible. I look foward to continue working with Alpha 5 Even though I'm just a Network Engineer trying to fit on programmers shoes!!!!

    Yoly,

I recommend you consider purchasing Dr. Wayne's book, "Alpha Five, The Database For Everyone". It's
an excellent introduction to Alpha Five and is available
from Alpha Software. I believe you can order it online.

Your question about a main menu is easily answered. Just create a dummy table ( one that you won't be saving any real information in ) and base your opening form on it. You can set the properties of your database so that the opening form runs (auto loads) whenever the database is opened. On the opening form place buttons which open other forms. These buttons become your menu into your application.

Each form can have its own custom menu, also (Functions listed across top of form), but that's a more advanced topic.

        Hi there...

Maybe this will help with some basic understanding of Alpha. Tom helped me today with a problem I was having and in trying to explain it to him, I created a very small sample application and winzipped it. I shipped it to Tom for his comments.

You can find it under the thread "Saved Ops & Scripts". Unzip it into a work directory. There are only 4 very basic files but there are also some forms and a menu. Let me know if I can help any further.

        Larry :-)

          Yoly,

For your question (1) you are on the right track. All the information for a corporation or loan should be together in a table for that particular item. If the data gets printed and used together very frequently, it probably belongs together in the same table. Your data should formed into convient and easy to use groups this way.

For your question (3)you generally create a form or browse to view and change the data. Forms are better for individual records and give a better structured data entry screen. A browse is good for viewing a list of data like potential insurers or a list of existing loans. Either one can be used to change or enter data.

I suspect that when you go to link your tables together into sets, you may need to be more careful of the data fields being identical in length and type. The data in the linking fields should also be unique on at least one side too.

          Dave
