Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    SQL Connectivity

    Ok,

Enough about the cost. Its going to be what it is, so no point in dwelling on it. Either it is prohibitive and I give up my on the side work or I cough up and hope I atleast getmy worth out of it.

    Anyway,

About using A5.5 as a front end for a SQLServer. Will it work for this. The limited ability of earlier Alpha products with SQL has hampered its usefulness, where I work. Is Alpha going to be able to read/write to SQL tables and have a more seemless connection than the pathetic ODBC connection earlier versions use.

This is the main reason why I am looking into VFP again. The MSDE engine.

    RE: SQL Connectivity

    Mark,

Ver 5 is better than V4/4.5 in that it has an ODBC import genie that uses ADO.

I am able to import Oracle data much better than before. One nice thing is that using you can now filter the incoming data, and also select only the fields you need.

But you're probably going to have to wait until V6 to get what you need. See the Alpha Newsletter (last month or the one before) for more info.

      RE: SQL Connectivity

So, in other words, it really doesn't do anything better than it used too.

See, for me, without a better implementation to SQL/Oracle/Firebird or whatever, it is still half-usable.

I had hoped, to be able to take my UPSManager software, add a shipping manifest module and tie them into the SQL dataserver tables that are already available to store all this info.

If I am correct, this is still not feasible using Alpha.

If I am wrong, please correct me.

        RE: SQL Connectivity

I know that this sounds like the same old story, but WAIT.

Alpha has stated that Alpha5v5 or v6 will be ADO Compliant. This means that you can use alpha as a front-end tool to ANY ADO "database" software. I saw this either in another thread, or via e-mail from alpha. I will research and follow up.

          RE: SQL Connectivity

Alpha is saying that V6 will use ADO natively..
V5 will not.. V5 is good at importing SQL Server data for example, but the jury's out on if it can be used successfully to query/update/delete data. I have not been able to get it to work very well yet, but will try again when the production release is out.

            RE: SQL Connectivity

            Mark:

The new release is basically unworkable as a front end against a back end SQL database such as Oracle, Sybase SQL Anywhere and Pervasive SQL - and - I assume against MSSQL V7/2000. You will not get workable capability until Alpha V6, when it does it with ADO.

The current connectivity is ODBC and it doesn't work.

I have exhasutively worked with this product with these databases and conversed with Alpha directly on all of the issues. They said V6 will do it. They have no intentention of fixing the ODBC bugs due to "old code."

So if you want immediate reliable connectivity, I suggest you try another development system such as Clarion For Windows V5.5 which can connect effortlessly to ANYTHING in abouts 2min with no coding.

I'll continuing using V5 for dbf development because it's a pretty decent product.
