Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

RE: New Pricing - Missing the Boat

V4.5 is v4 with fixes. V5 is much much more. I would hate to have somone base whether or not to buy into version 5 by using version 4.5.

RE: New Pricing - Missing the Boat

      Folks,

I am a professional Alpha 5 Message Board Lurker, practically never emerging from viewing mode. However, all this "discussion" seems geared toward one thing -- turning off potential buyers of Version 5. The threads begun yesterday seem more like newsgroup trolling than constructive discussion.

For a while there, it looked as if Keith B was beginning to understand that the pricing would probably NOT be the obstacle he seemed originally to think. Now he proclaims Alpha's pricing as "missing the boat".

      Which is it, Keith B?

Btw, which "new users" are going to be put off by the pricing, those who just want to tinker with a database program, or those who prefer not to pay for good software? What Alpha is proposing is reasonable, especially if you're developing and selling your wares; it's like saying you want to make some extra cash by fixing cars but don't want to pay for the right tools (just borrow your neighbor's tools indefinitely, right?). The tinkerer, however, would likely be turned off.

If I can get my boss's mind off of Access long enough (he's enamored with the plethora of Access books and other resources; can't blame him there), I hope to be able to buy what we need of version 5 (probably 3-user full version and 10-user runtime). The boss might balk, but I at least have to try.

Sorry for the rant, but the complaints were starting to smell a little funny to me.

RE: New Pricing - Missing the Boat

        Doug,
When you simply lurk, you fail to get involved in the conversation. If you can add some constructive criticism to my concerns then, please do so anytime.
My original concerns were dampened somwhat when I found out what the Runtime option offered and at what price level. I am not a current Alpha 5 user and am merely here to find out what it is like, what to expect in Ver 5.0, what kind of support might be available and what the current pricing is. The database program I choose will be jsut one tool in my toolbox with a new project I hope to develop. I originally saw Alpha 5 at $145 which is a price point below the competition and yet seemingly a better product for those who will take the time and effort to investigate and ask questions. However, even though the shock of what I thought I might have to pay was softened upon some helpful direction by a few folks here at this board (hence one reason I am here). So, if I only needed one tool in my tool box the fact that it had gone up by 2.4 times its original price then I might be able to handle that. A $10 wrench is now $24. A5 going from $145 to $349 is the same increment and very steep, unless somehow Alpha can convince me that this new product is worthy of that kind of increase. All I have heard here is that A5 Ver 4.5 was just a quick fix or such for Ver 4.0. How am I to know what Ver 5.0 really contains. I don't even own Alpha at all at this point. I am trying to make an educated decision to purchase based simply on the promotional material at the Alpha Software website, some good comments here of what is expected in 5.0 and one old article I found about A5 Ver 3 or 4. I've got a lot of tools that need to go into my toolbox aside from A5. Somebody will need to demonstrate that the new $24 wrench is somehow worth 2.4 times more before I buy. You might have been a new user at one time and when you paid out of your own pocket you probably were looking for the best price vs. productivity option you could find.

On a side note, you can see some dancing bananas ceremoniously welcoming A5V5 to fruition.

            Keith,

            1) The price for V5 never was $145. That was v4.5. It is common prictive for software companies to raise the price on a new release.

            2) V5. will be all that it's been claimed to be. How about this? Call and place your order and ask if they still have the money back guarentee. I believe Alpha has always had a 60 day 100% money back guarentee, less S&H. Where else will you find that?

              Keith,

Maybe you can download the free trial - try before you buy as it were. Contact Alpha, maybe they will help. I bet they add v5 to the free trial page soon.

RE: New Pricing - Missing the Boat

I think the free trial was only for v4.5. Their web site hasn't changed and I haven't heard that'they'll provide v5 as a free trial. I think Keith has been working with the beat version anyhow.

Yes, there will be a trial version of Version 5. I do not know exactly when it will becime available, but it should be shortly after the V5 is available.

RE: New Pricing - Missing the Boat

OK, so you can save 1.0-(1.0/2.4)= 58% on the initial cost of the software - but it takes 5-10 times as long to develop each and every application. Now, if the software was costing $100,000's and your time is worth $1's - then the software cost is a big issue.

Though I'm sure it doesn't really matter to anyone else, I think the new users are getting a great deal - this price for a superior product is comparable to the competition. On the other hand, Alpha is kind of taking advantage of their existing customers in charging 2-3 times what the competitors do for upgrades. Most customers will pay it - because it's still worth every bit of it in the increased productivity.

I'll watch for a Trial version unless I decide on something before it is available.

I wasn't referring to Ver 5.0 being at $145 but rather A5 Ver 4.5. A nearly 2 1/2 times increase in price is not typical for new release of software. From the positive comments I've heard thus far, it does seem that Alpha is capable of introducing an extraordinary new version.
