I have a set made up of "salesman" (parent) and "sales" (child). the form asks for a date range (works fine) and sorts the child records according to the range selected. There is a calc field "total sales" on the form. I want to display a user message "processing, please wait", when the user goes to the next record, or when he/she selects "find by key". After the "total sales" field has re-calculated, I want the message to go away. Ideas?

Use a text box control instead of ui_msg_box() and have your script hide it when the form loads, show it when you want to, and then hide it again later on.
If you have trouble synchronizing the sequence you may find that it will work better if you use three user defined functions:
1) the first would show the text box
2) the second would do the calc or summary computation
3) the third would hide the text box
By putting these routines in separate functions each will run to completion before the next begins.

I am testing your suggestion. Very clever. I created 3 functions (see below) that set a message text, sleep for 1 second, and then clear the message text. The 3 functions are played in the form's On_Fetch event as:

It works great! I do have 1 question. I had to hard code the form name (f_payroll) in the func_showmsg and func_hidemsg functions. I have tried a dozen different ways to use a global pointer which would make the functions generic. Any ideas on how I can do that?

If I understand your question properly you would like to be able to use the same function on multiple forms and messages and pass the reference to the form from function to function.
I solved a somewhat similar problem by putting the name of the form in a variable and passing that around creating pointers locally as necessary which would probably not be necessary in your case as you could write:
eval(vFormname+":g_msg.value") = message

You guys are the best. I tried both solutions and both worked like a charm (6 ways to skin a cat). THANKS. The next step is to perform some calculations on the form while displaying the "Fetching" message. Functions are unchartered territory for me, but the more I use them, the more I understand and like them.Comment
