Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Code Editor

    I am using Beta v1215
I have been working on a rather large application for 6 weeks now. The problem is, I cannot get the Code Editor to come up like the one in the manuel. All I get is a almost blank screen with two tabs, script or untitled and interactive. I have never seen the one with 3 windows or the selection "Container". When I right click on an object in the Form Editor, the manual says to select "action". There is no "action".
I am sure I have some option set incorrectly, but I am at a point that I really need this.??

Knowing what you can achieve will not become reality until you imagine and explore.

Sounds like you're seeing the popup editor. If so, push the button in lower left quadrant of the form, to launch code editor.

        RE: Code Editor

        Don,

If you select the code tab on the control panel and then right click on a blank area you'll get a new menu. One of the choices is a new action scripting script. In this case you'll see the untitled and interactive tabs. It is untitled because this is where you develop scripts that can be called from other parts of your program; i.e., they are not tied to events.

When in form design mode, right clicking on any object will open a menu. The second choice on the menu is events. Clicking here will show a list of all the events that can be programmed for the object selected. You can also select the pop up editor which gives you access to all the events for the object.

If you select an event by left clicking, you'll open the code editor with two tabs; one's the interactive tab and the other is a tab for the event you chose. Now if you click on the select object button, you'll see another list of all the objects available that have events. Choose an object and the right button will activate and let you choose any event for the selected object.

As you can see, there are many ways to get to the same point in the design of a database.

Hope this helps. If this isn't what's happening, let us know.

          RE: Code Editor

Thank you all for your response.
The code editor that I refer to is in the XBasic Ref Manual, Action Scripting, Creating Action Scripts - Using the Code Editor. There is a picture of a code editor that I have never accessed. I followed the instructions to bring it up under the Form Editor, but I don't get the same results. I downloaded a file "contacts" to look at more code examples and it locked up Alpha on my machine. By the time I got it off, all my menu setting are changed (default). So I never know if I am seeing every thing.
          Thanks, Don

            Don,

If you're using the Xbasic Ref. Manual for vers 4.5 and looking at the action scripting editor in vers. 5, I can appreciate why you're confused. The editor is now completely different in the Beta than in vers. 4.5.

Your right, the cover says Version 5, I took it to mean something else.
              Thank You
