Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Problem with tabbed form.

I use A5 v4.3 to run my optician practice.

I have one form with six tabs. I use each tabbed form to record different info about my patients e.g. personal details, eye condition, equipment issued, standard letters etc. One of the forms is twice as lond as the other five. It prints a report which I send to the referring consultant and I have to use the scroll bar to navigate around it. My problem is that when I navigate to another record using the arrows at the top of the screen I often just get a grey screen and I have to use the scroll bar to get to the top of the form. I assume it is not possible to have different length forms for the different tabs.

I am grateful for any help - I am not very au fait with X basic.

You are correct, each tab on a tabbed form must have the same size as all the others. Perhaps you could split the data on the last tab into 2 tabs??

      RE: Problem with tabbed form.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have squashed all the fields on the longest tab so that they now all appear on the screen without using the scroll bars. However the page length is still the same. I have tried right clicking on the form in design mode and changing the page length on the page tab in properties but the figures change back to the original 26.6cms. I also right clicked in the page in design mode and tried to reduce the length by dragging the frame bars upwards but the bottom edge of the page remained static. Any further suggestions?

        RE: Problem with tabbed form.

If the size of a tabbed subform won't reduce, it's because there is an object, hidden or visible, on one of the tabs that limits the minimum size. While in design mode, click on the edit/select all and see if an object shows up where you didn't expect it.

          Gil,

You say, "I have squashed all the fields on the longest tab so that they now all appear on the screen without using the scroll bars. However the page length is still the same."

How are you printing the information? Are you printing a report or simply printing the form you see on-screen?

If you are not using a report, I hightly recommend it.

If you want to always see the top of the page when you change tabs, there is xbasic code to accomplish this.

          More specifics please.

            Thanks to you all.

Tom, I have a report which prints out the info entered in the form. What is the Xbasic to allways go to top of a form when you navigate through the records?

Thanks Ohlen. I found a tiny RTF field which I don't remember putting there! I expanded it and it was empty so I deleted it and was then able to reduce the page. Again , many thaks,

                RE: Problem with tabbed form.

Gil, I'm not sure there is a method that will do this cleanly. (That's part of the reason I try to avoid forms longer than one screen.) If I recall correctly, the only way to move to the top of the screen is to activate an object near the top. However, I believe this has varying results depending on how close to the top and where other objects are located.

Perhaps someone else can provide a better method?

                  Gil,

                  Experiment with Cal's method.

In general (in fact, in every case but one) I employ Cal's practice of fitting forms to the screen hight but in one case I had to have a *very* long form because the "form" was a complete market-research interview, about 40 questions.

Because scrolling around this monster was horrible, I put navigation buttons at the top, bottom and one or two places in the middle to jump to the beginning, end, and an intermediate location and they always worked fine.

Thanks Cal & Bill for the tip. I have now adjusted all my forms to fit onto the screen,
