Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    OnEditField??

I am wanting to have A5 automatically change the value in field 1 (field 1 name is "Label" and the value of "Label" is either "N" or "Y", and is a character field)when the data in field 2 (field 2 name is "Price" and is a numeric field) has been edited and saved.
    Thanks

    RE: OnEditField??

    Tony,

Us the on_depart event of price. You code could be something on the order of,
    if(price.value>0,label.text="Y",Label.text = "N")

You may have to fiddle with this and perhaps use the text property of the price control as there may be no value until the record is saved. Some variant of the above will work.

      RE: OnEditField??

You can also do it at the table level using the OnWrote Field event. The advantage is that it will then happen in any form or browse you design without additional scripting. The disadvantage is that you may end up with refresh/resynch issues if you want to see the changed value immediately. ("Immediately" meaning before going to a different record and returning.)

If you aren't planning to have a plethora (I have to throw in a big word once in awhile) of forms and don't plan to let the user work from a browse, I'd go with the form method that Bill suggests.

The only thing I would add about using the form method is that I generally check to see if the form is already in a data entry mode before allowing an automatic change. It can be disconcerting to users if the form suddenly goes into change mode as they tab through fields just to view them. When asked to save changes in this situation, you never know whether they will respond with 'yes' or 'no'. This is a matter of personal preference and theoretically it shouldn't happen because the data should be entered correctly in the first place BUT what if somebody changes the Y/N manually after entering the price? Perhaps a msg_box could be added if the change occurs from the View mode? (Gee, has anyone noticed all the 'what-ifs' that can occur in programming?)

        Cal
Can you go into detail as to how to accomplish this at the table level. I am assuming going into the edit field rules for my table, making an event for the field "price", then what. What is the code that I need to write to change the value of the field "label" to "N" when someone changes the value of the field "price".
        Thanks
        Tony
