How do I enter the Windows login name into a field

Can anyone help me.

I want to record the name of the Windows user automatically into a form.

I also want to record anyone that amendeds the record automatically.


Is this possible?


Example someone who puts an order onto our system i want to record the user who logged on to the system entered the password in.

In A5v4.5 there is no real easy way to trap the windows user name, although it can be done. In A5V5 there is a new function - api_getusername() which will return the Windows user name and another function api_getmachinename which returns the assigned computer name. These are based on a function getmachinename() which was origianlly posted by Dr Peter Wayne. This function works for some in v4.5 but not for others. In v5, both of the new functions seem sto work perfectly.

Once the user name is trapped, iut can be saved to a global variable which can be used anywhere. You can use the CanSaveRecord event in the table field rules to check for the existance of the variable and write it to a field, along with a date, before a record is saved. Here is example, which is a copy of a script I have on a table CanSaveRecord event to save the original entry date and later edit dates.

tbl = table.current()

tbl.date_edit = date()
if tbl.mode_get() = 2
tbl.date_enter = date()
end if

I have a little VB6 program (~24k) that when run creates a file in the root directory that has the login name, ip address, and computer that you can then read into Alpha.
Let me know if you would like it. It works well until V5 is out in July.
