Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

ActiveX in Beta A5V5 Newest Build

I have a demo of a bar code printing ActiveX control from a company called BizFonts. I am unable to configure it properly when trying to set up a new report to print a bar code for me. The only thing on the tool pallett is Static ActiveX control and I can create one, but none of the properties like check digit calc, etc are available.
They work properly under Access 2000 so I know it's not the ActiveX control itself. I think it's registered properly but I must be doing something wrong.
Can someone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks,
    Alan Sawyer

RE: ActiveX in Beta A5V5 Newest Build

I think the problem is with the Beta itself. I am having similar problems with the Kodak Imaging controls, and when I sopke with Selwyn about it he said they were having problems with getting windows to report back all the activex controls problems. He said they are working on it and hope to have a resolution soon.

    regards

Thanks for the information. I'll continue to try it in each new Beta. Is using a "Static ActiveX" control the right way or is there another component that I should be using?
I can't find any docs anywhere on ActiveX.

Yes, you should be using the Static Active X control option from the toolbar .. if are you are sure the control is properly registered (i.e. it appears in the drop down list of available controls) then the control's own controls should be visible when you run that form.

Having said that, my experience with ActiveX is limited to adding the MS Calendar control to a form and using it to navigate through our scheduler .. and that works beautifully .. much faster than our own self-created calendar ..

Thanks, Yes it appears and when I create the field in the report, I can see the barcode, but I don't have access to any of the properties that I should have. I only have color and font size. There are a bunch of properties that I should see for that ActiveX control. There are also additional ActiveX controls that do barcodes so I might play with a couple of those to see if I can get one of them to work. I need to see if A5V5 is going to work for me in this particular app because I'm really starting to want to be programming in A5V5 permanently and not have to fall back to VB.
          Thanks,

If you right click on the ActiveX field in the form and select "Events" you should see an "ActiveXEvent" and within that A5 should present a series of "Functions" into which you can insert Xbasic code to use the control to manipulate your application. What do you have in there?

I have Scripts/Functions but can't seem to find anything in it. No actual functions are listed that I can find.

RE: ActiveX in Beta A5V5 Newest Build

I grabbed another ActiveX control from Mabry software and when I added it, I can see the functions that you're talking about. The barcode control gives me nothing.
What I'm expecting is that there are "properties" which aren't really events. For example in VB in "Properties" it lists the Barcode type, which I can drop down a list of them to pick one.
I can also set whether I want barcode check digits or not.
I'm not exactly sure what's going on. I also downloaded and installed beta 1154 from 6/12 and it still does the same thing.

RE: ActiveX in Beta A5V5 Newest Build

With the ActiveXEvent open and the Functions visible

                  Click on View
                  Choose Xbasic explorer
In the explorer drill down through Objects/Windows to your form
Click on the + and click the ActiveX object/Properties

That list should tell you what property values you can get and put to the control.

I'm going to take a look at the Mabry controls ... we are looking to incorporate more than the calendar.

                    Thanks,
I also downloaded a demo of another barcode ActiveX control and it appears to work better. I will play some more but I have been somewhat successful in printing the barcode that I want to using a control called BarCodeX.
Maybe we could start a thread or something on ActiveX controls that people test with A5V5 and that work.

                      Finian:

Could you elaborate on this. I'm interested in building, obtaining, purchasing a scheduling calendar with significant functionality such as Outlook's.

Where do you get the MS calendar control?

Do a message board search on "Calendar Control 8.0" it should put you in a thread called "Beta Question" which has most all the details you'll need.
