Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    lookup

    Hi Phorum,

I hate to pester you folks but suddenly things went wrong. My DB has several tables with no set involved. I use the jobs table to store all of the data. I have always used a lookup (with auto popup on entrance) to fill in the profile of the customer and it has worked fine for a year or so. I just added more fields to the lookup mapping and now the lookup table does not popup on entrance nor does it fill in all fields in the map.

ANY help will be graciously accepted,
    efs

    RE: lookup

You probably have, but, did you try compacting the database?

And don't expect it to popup on entrance in change mode. But it sounds like something that compacting might cure.

      efs,

Check the linking field. I had that happen once and it was due to an improper linking field. You probably didn't change it but check the link carefully.

          Hi Ken,

There is no set involved, just lookup from 3 other tables.

            Ed,

In some situations the popup on entrance seems to only work when entering a new record. Xbasic workarounds have been posted to force the popup any time the field gets focus. Search this forum. I remember message traffic on this during the past week.

Mismapping of fields is almost always a field name issue.

It's also possible to get different versions of a database mixed up with one another.

Why not zip a working model of your database and post it here with instructions on what (specifically) to look for?

              efs,

Aren't you still going to need some type of lookup field? Else, how would alpha know what to do and where to go?

Any reason why you can't make a set?

                Hi Ken,

No specific reason why I don't use a set here other than it is not
necessary. I am using the cust_name field to enter the customers
profile into each job record, it is this field that is mapped in the
                lookup.

                  Hi Tom,

I'll try to pare it down so it will zip to less than a meg.

                    Hi Phorum,

I dumped a lot of data after I copied the work folder to a temp folder
in order to zip it down to a meg or less. Poof, only in Orlando, I
must have had some corrupted data because it works as advertized now.
                    Big ... big relief.

                    Thank you all for helping,

                      efs,

On which folder is it working, the original or the temp folder?

I wonder if it's really corrupted data? Got my doubts. I think you did something else?? My curiousity, how can the data itself become corrupted. That almost scares me. If the data becomes corrupted, one cannot 'dump the data' to fix it.

Elaborate a bit more, por favor!!

                        Hi Ken,

I swear all I did was try to zip it up to post on here. When I saw
that the zip file was over 5 megs, I copied the original folder to a
temp folder, then emptied the tables in the temp folder and zipped it
up. Then I tested the zip file and found that everything was working
perfectly. Hence not needing the data in the original folder, I
emptied those also and tested it. That is when I learned that all is
well in Mudville. I swear !

That's close, I didn't append the old data back into the tables.
Hopefully I will do that today when I receive the new data from the
client. I did enter some phony data for test purposes.
