Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    custom screen and find popup

Beginner question here!!! I have developed opening screen with no tool bars, only buttons. Also disabled Alpha4 from starting normally in the background, so only have the custom screen when starting.

But, when it starts, the custom screen always has to be maximized. Is there a way to start it fully maximized??? It starts so you can see it, so it is not minimized. But alsways must take that extra step to maximze it.

One other question. I have a button that brings up the "Find text" dialogue box. Is there a way to specify where that box pops up, so that it is not covering an area of the form below it?

Thanks for any help in advance.

On the OnActivate event for the form you can use xbasic or action scripting to force the form to maximize. Open the form in design mode. From the design menu, select Form, Actions. Scroll down the script field to the OnActivate event, right click on the ActionScripting icon in the left window and select Insert Command. Go to the Window category and select Window Maximize, accept all defaults, and save the actions script and form. Now it will open maximized.

As for the find box, I think where it opens is dictated by Windows and you have no real control over that.

Regarding the popup location, you could design a form to open as a dialog, and put your prompt in that. Then you can specify where the form will open. I've done this before, but it's somewhat complicated for a beginner.

In version 5, it will be much easier to create dialog forms.

RE: custom screen and find popup

Thanks for your help. I must be doing somwthing wrong. I open the database by holding down the Shift key so that I can get to the Alpha menu, etc. I then open the form in design mode, click on Form menu, click on Actions and the Code Editor appears. The Script Tab is the active tab on the field "container" has "form0" and the "Script" filed has "On Activate."

Below in Action it has Iline Xbasic and to the right in the editor box has Parent.maximize().

I click on save and this saves the script (I do not rename it) and then save the form.

When I open it it is still the same and still have to maximize it.

I do appreciate your time and help and hopefully you will see something little I am doing wrong here.

By the way, the name of my form is "form". Will that make a difference?

RE: custom screen and find popup

            Galen,

That should work. However, others have experienced the same problem where maximize doesn't seem to work. I have not seen this before myself since I rarely use action scripting, but a little experimentation shows that changing Parent to Parentform worked. (result - parentformm.maximize()). The Alpha created parent.maximize() did not work for me either. Both are relative references and sometimes a little experimentation is needed to get everything working correctly. You can also try Topparent.

Another thing pops out. You say the field container has "form0" when you indicated that the form is named "form". This indicates that the original form is still open. Alpha adds a number after the form name for each instance opened and left open after the original(original - "form", second copy opened - "form0", third copy opened - "form1" and so on) Go up to the windows tab and check if the form is still open. If you edit a second copy, the changes may not be applied to the original.

I also agree with Ray that you should be careful with names. Alpha does an amazing job keeping everything separated, but why make the job difficult. If the form is an opening menu form, why not name it "MainMenu"? As the database becomes more complex (They all do eventually) you will thank yourself for more descriptive names. Another caveat about names. Avoid spaces, use the underline instead or just use capitalization to "split" the words (like MainMenu above). Alpha will add the underline in scripts and this can be confusing.

You might want to take a look at the Latest Newsletter. There is an article on naming in issue 4. (Issue 4 was the latest newsletter at the time this was written. And, personally, I think it's a great article - but my opinion might be slightly biased.)

If you aren't on the newsletter distribution, contact Bill Warner.

                Gee Cal,

why would you be "slightly" biased? Actually, your article was a very good one and should be required reading for any relatively new user (and some more experienced ones too!) Too often we learn the hard way.

RE: custom screen and find popup

                  Jerry,
Thanks for your suggestion. It now works when I added "form" to create Parentform.maximize().

So now that is good, but.........I am not through with changing some things on the form. Now starting Alpha while holding down the shift key no long works. The form stays maximized and I can't get to what's underneath, I assume the regular Alpha desktop is still under there. When it started "not maximized" I could get to the Alpha desktop to change things, like the scripting to make it maximize on start up.

Sorry for these questions. Everyone has been such a great help. I have a lot to learn!!

                  Thanks,

                  Galen
