Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Mail Labels in current ver of A5

I have used A4 1.1 for ages and found the mail label format process the only one that met the needs. Question: Does anyone know if that has been changed to lose any flexibility in A5?

    Harold,

It will be hard for most of us to remember back that far.

Alpha Four, vers. 1.1, was a DOS product that was released a long, long time ago.

Is there some particular feature that you're anxious to know is present in Alpha Five, vers. 4?

To Tom Cone. Thanks om for the reply: Yes, long long time ago is the word OK In A4 1.1 I can format the labels with more lines than fit on the label since at least one of the total number does not get used in each case. That happens for the reason that some of the addresses need an extra line and some require a country name. I have Lotus 123 and Approach but they are loaded with so called automatic helps that I cant use them. Harold

A5 labels have a soft carriage return that is programmed by pressing shift/enter at the end of a line. If there is no data on the line, the carriage return does not execute. Would this work for you?

For Ohlen Cartwell: Thanks, that sounds as if it may act as I need. I am assuming that when there is no data on a label line that the printer would skip that line without printing an empty line and would go on to the next line with data. In that case it would do the what is needed. Does that assumption sound correct? Another assumption I made was that I could transfer the huge number of records from A4 1.1 to the current A5 without retyping them all. That task is beyond me. The reason for considering A5 is that if I need to pass the whole volunteer project on to someone else, younger people may not be into DOS.

Yes, if a line has no data, the next line is printed. Regarding data: All of your data will remain intact; however, all of the layouts (forms, reports, letters, labels) as well as operations and scripts will need to be redone.

Thank you Ohlen. That bit about the labels was the major angst. The redo of the data entry forms, label format and reports I could handle. Thanks for thinking about it
