Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Looking at backup

How can I just look at a backed up file without opening the current database. Everytime I try to open up a zipped backup I get the current info. Hope I am making sense.

    RE: Looking at backup

    David,

Your question isn't clear, at least to me.

If I needed to work with archived data, I'd arrange to store it in differently named tables, and I'd suppress all edits, to maintain its integrity.

If you're trying to verify that the backup is working just unzip the thing to a different folder from your regular database, and play with it there. And yes, if you're going to do this with Alpha Five the restored files will have to be accessed through a database...

If this doesn't get it, clarify further.

      RE: Looking at backup

Thanks Tom, let me clarify a little better. I took a database and unzipped it into a totally new Folder. I then when to my adb file to open and I still get records up to date that are not even in the database. I always date my zip and the one zip was dated 3-30-02 and I still get records entered even after 3-30 that should not be in there yet. Does that make sense?

        David,

If you are opening the same adb file, it will not work.
The adb points to the current dbf's.

What you need to do is:
        1. unzip to new folder
        2. >>> create a NEW database

So what you are saying is that I must start over again basically. Bummer. Don't worry, I understand what you mean, it just could be easier...such is life!!!

            RE: Looking at backup

If your application is all in one directory you might not need all the described steps. Try opening Alpha itself, go to the file menu, open database menu item, and navigate to the directory where you unzipped your files. You should see "myapplicationname.adb".

Choosing this to open should open your copy of your application.
            There can be only one.

              RE: Looking at backup

              David,

You are not "starting over". If you want to keep your current active/production dbf's and not overwrite them,
The you need to create the second/new adb so you can look at the old version's from the .zip.

Incidentally, it only takes about a minute to create the second abd and add the tables. After that, all you have to do is unzip the tables when you want to look at them.

I recommend you call the new adb something like 'Backup" or "zipped" so you don't confuse active with backup.

I think the issue is "what is a backup."

If you back up the whole application then you can do as Stan suggests. Unzip it to its own folder and open it up.

I think Melvin is describing how to deal with a backup of just the data, or perhaps even just the tables. Then you've got some issues to deal with.

Personally, I back up the entire application. When you need a backup you don't want to have to fiddle around with anything else because you are probably already having a really bad day!

And more than one backup is really a lifesaver (sometimes). I backup my entire application to backup folder created as a subfolder of the main application folder. Then I backup the entire application once a week or so during development to a CD-RW. I backup active data daily to floppys using pkzip and remove the floppies to a separate premise. You can't have too many backups.
